Alright so it looks like there is a good chance the Air Force will be moving me back to San Angelo TX this summer .

I just got my first two bird dogs (GSP) and I'm very concerned about getting them exposure and experience.

I'm from SW KS and will hunt back home when I can but I cant exactly make days trips out of that.

Alright so what are some ideas for my pups if this happens and for me bird hunting is my passion but im not rich enough nor do I prefer pen birds, damn sure can afford them in TX.

The quail population has bounced back in that area, really all of Texas, if you want to look into wildlife management areas or leasing. You having dogs is a plus and could more than likely get you invited to leases in that area. You might want to check out Texas Hunting Forum also, there is an Upland Bird Hunting section.

Texas had the best quail year in 30 years. Hopefully we will get some spring rains and it will continue next year. The public hunting is limited but there is some Texas Parks and Wildlife Department WMA's around San Angelo.

Other than that, you will pay to hunt. Alot of deer leases will lease out the quail hunting rights after deer season has ended, so that gives you 2 months to hunt. Cost range in the $1 to $4 an acre.

Good luck and thank you for your service.

The buying of the lifetime license is a smart move, wish I would have done so before I moved away for college (always thought I'd be back).

Obviously, I have no clue what your financial situation is like, but I'd do everything I could to get on a quail lease. We moved 52 coveys in one day not terrible far from where you will be stationed.

I watched two puppies last year who spent the entire time in Montana messing with one another's and their own check cords in mid-October to being rock solid, honest as can be and dead on their birds bird dogs by the end of February. Watched another go from too small to actually hunt in MT last year to being nails by the end of February. Needless to say, all three of those dogs are amazing in their second seasons. Birds make bird dogs -- and you'll be smack dab in the middle of what is likely to be the best bird numbers we'll ever see (let's hope not though!).

The advice to buy a Kansas Lifetime Hunting License is good if you are eligible to do it. It is the best deal I have heard of anywhere. There will be some tags, stamps, etc. you will still have to buy annually on years you come back to hunt, but you will be treated as a resident for big game tags and turkey tags.

If you can't pay the full amount you can do it on eight installments(payment every three months for two years). Your paid receipt for the current installment serves as a license until you have made your last payment, then you get the Lifetime Card.
