Looking for a duck club for my son and I

I realize that this is an upland/pheasant hunting forum, however I have been trying to find a duck club that leases blinds/spots for its members for duck hunting. The reason being is that I want to get my 12yr old son out on some waterfowl for the first time, however I don't want to have to deal with all the idiot sticks on the SWA's and public land.

I lived here long enough to know what to expect. it is one thing for me, however I would like to find somewhere, where I would have to pay some kind of membership fee which is fine (not a crazy amount) for access to member only spots that aren't public, and places that are easy to get to and you don't have to park like 1 or 2 miles away from your truck and haul your blind, dekes and all the other stuff.

Any suggestions or otherwise just send me a PM.

Not sure why you need to haul in a blind ??? Hunted everywhere this state has to offer and never once wasted my time with hauling in a blind!! My best Duck hunt ever was on a SWA!!! Not because we limited out, but because I called in numerous flocks of Mallards that came down through the timber( right down the elevator) 20 feet in front and 3 feet off the water 19 greenheads later and 1 hen we were waiting for bonus ducks 15 minutes in!!!! It was work. but well worth it!! If you put in the time you can find these spots that everyone else will not travel!! I have not hunted Tamarack but a few times and have done o.k. but since you have to put in a reservation, you will be the only one hunting that section until 9 when I think you can walk around. It is like 9 miles long along the Platte River, so there is a lot of room. But I never really learned that SWA!! There are warm water sloughs on certain sections and More Quail then Pheasants as well!!! This is only one area of many that can be good!!! Find where the birds like and set up!!!!! I find the better hunting east of Sterling , more numbers of ducks the further East I travel!! That doesn't mean you can't limit out around the front range!!! A lot of trips and scouting and you will soon have a honeyhole!!!

I'm dreading the day I have to join a club or pay to hunt. I'm sure its coming as Colorado has changed into an entirely different State within the past 10 years. Too many folks moving in and too many folks moving in with that pay-to-hunt mentality. :(

Right now I count my blessings that I have access to a place with outstanding waterfowl, quail, elk, deer & antelope within an hour of Colorado Springs, and have become friends with few farmers in the Ark Valley that let me goose hunt as well.

I hear CWA is one of the better clubs north or Denver although I've talked to a few guys that have said the membership is getting too large, and then there is the Snyder Duck club out by Fort Morgan ( they have a website).

Good luck with your search

Thanks for the suggestions. I joined the CWA forum. My thing about the SWA is that they are hit and miss.

Believe you me I have hunted waterfowl from Alaska to Texas. For me it is not big deal to walk a mile or so into a SWA and hunker down in some reeds or whatever with a few dekes out.

However with a 12yr old and the patience that comes along with that (my son has ADHD and has childhoo onset bipolar disorder) I dont' have the luxury to just say suck it up and have him walk a long way in waders, carrying his gun and stuff.

Bleubijou....I have hunted SWA in Colorado from north of Denver down to the Arkansas valley, however I am very cautious on exposing my son to SWA's due to the number of hunters and there alot of irresponsible ones also time.

I am retired military that now works as a contractor, so my time is there money. I dont' hav emuch time off during the week and he is in school, so the weekends are it along with all hte other hunters. I would just like the convenience of a private place with only myself and maybe one or two hunters so my son could have a good experience.

That's all...if it were just me, well I know of plenty of SWA's to go to however there is alot of walking carrying in alot of gear and carrying it out.

That's why I like pheasant hunting. While I was a duck hunter before I go tinto upland hunting...I have drifted more into the upland realm due to the fact that you don't have to get up at o'dark thirty, put on waders, carry dekes, gun, shells, coffee, chair, and whatever else. Worry about camo, some sort of blind setup, etc.

In upland like pheasant, you find a place private or public, have a good dog and walk it, no sitting. No birds, well get back in the truck and drive some more. Just my thoughts...

Flooded timber in Colorado :eek::eek::eek:

That is the exception rather than the rule!!! Trust me I have had some awesome hunts and limited out by 0930hrs in the am on SWA's....however those places are now either A) closed or B) filled with droves of hunters.....

I have hunted waterfowl on the Front Range of Colorado since 1995. Things have changed ALOT since then....so Colorado Springs Wildlife area anymore, Ramah is done, no water....all the places along the Arkansas are full of hunters as is Pueblo and up by Elevenmile is also.

Heck, I hunted Antero Res back before they drained it and allowed hunting there. The thing is there is not any decent places to hunt waterfowl that are public within 1 hour of Colorado Springs....most are 2hrs or further away...

Pueblo can be could where the river dumps into the reservoir, especially if you like shooting Goldeneyes. I've had the best luck there when its really cold. No boat required

They are not the best eating duck being diver ducks, however I am shot them before.

How would that be for a 12yr old? The walk from the truck to where you setup?
