Lodging/Eating Recommendations

I've been studying the KS WIHA atlas. Planning a trip for the end of the month. I'm thinking about trying the Lane/Ness/Hodgeman counties area. I'd appreciate any tips on dog friendly motels and places to get a good meal.

Thanks, Nick

Throwing this out one more time. Any feedback is appreciated. Thinking either Jetmore or Ness City for home base. Never stayed in Jetmore and it's been probably 10 years since I stayed at the Derrick Inn in Ness. Thinking about the Lazy R Motel in Jetmore. Looks like they have a Bar & Grill in town. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks, Nick

Theres some air bnbs around, but I think most of them are booked. You can search ness city air bnb and it pull them up. I think there there is one in hanston three in ness and maybe one in the northern part of the county plus some in jetmore.

We stayed at The Derrick Inn in November. Not sure they own a vacuum, but besides that the beds and baths were clean. Dogs in the room no problem. Great Mexican restaurant around the corner. Great place to get a breakfast sandwich down the road as well.

Pawnee Valley lodge......really nice owners, clean and fresh place, dogs ok in room...in Jetmore.

Awe yes, the Derrick Inn. What a welcome we had. The fresh scent of inscents burning welcomes you after a long hard day of hunting. After paying up at the front desk with the nice lady with a baby on the tit, we made our way upstairs, dog and all. Keep your boots on, as the carpeted floors are sopping wet from the window condensation from the indoor heated pool. What a view of the pool, as it is basically an indoor courtyard with two stories of rooms surrounding the pool and hot tub. Oh the hot tub, and the naked trucker with the dew rag sitting in that hot tub. What a view, seems just like yesterday. This is the first time the dog slept in the bed, and I with all my clothes on. One hell of a memory!!

Forgot to mention the eating spots. You got the place on the corner or the pizza joint. The dude on the sidewalk recommended the pizza joint. You may want to try the spot on the corner. We had the pizza specials. One was basically a Supreme. That was ok. The other was their version of a Mexican Pizza. I have yet today come across another Mexican Pizza that can come close to that.....I don't really know how to describe that. This town definitely gave us a lasting memory and story. We always talk about it each and every trip. It set the standards.

That's funny right there.

Gotta love some of those small town Western Kansas hotels! We pulled into one around 4 or 5 years ago and one of my buddies went in to get a room. We were sitting in the truck and looked over to see a naked toddler spanking my buddy as he was at the counter!!! It was one of the funniest things I've seen, we still joke about it all the time.

Pawnee Valley Lodge in Jetmore is a nice place to stay. The Derrick Inn, well lets just say Rusty Trigger hit the nail on the head, we had about the same experience.

It definitely sounds like the Derrick Inn hasn't changed! I think we'll try the Pawnee Valley Lodge. Thanks for all the recommendations.

I spent the weekend with a buddy and his son working through Hodgeman county. We saw some birds, but it was a little disappointing. Lots of Walk-in, but lots of it was pasture. There may have been some thicker, bird-holding parts of those pastures, but it felt a little like a needle in a haystack situation. Also, we saw a surprising amount of other hunters for mid-January. Hope your results are better than ours.

We stayed in Dodge at the Best Western North Edge. We ate dinner saturday night at Central Station or something like that. Also eaten at Casey's Cowtown. Both are good enough. I've stayed at that hotel several times and I really like it. I'm sure it's more expensive than the Pawnee Valley Lodge-which looked decent enough as we drove through Jetmore.

My wife and I loved the stories about the Derrick inn. Never stayed there, but have a whole list of places we will never stay again. Several where we slept with our clothes on. Maybe a thread should be started about places not to stay. Near the top of our list is a place in North Dakota that didn't have any window coverings so we covered it with duct tape so my wife could shower. Only found out that there was only enough hot water for a couple rooms to have a shower every night and if you were not first it was a quickie.

Considering how hard we work to set money aside for hunting trips and at times and unknowingly stay in a dumpy motel. Perhaps we should put a list of motels that we wouldnt let our dogs stay in??? Lol

Oh the old Derrick Inn lol. I can tell some stories about that place. The bar that used to be downstairs called the Location used to have adult entertainment some weekends. I also know a guy that had some pretty wild hot tub parties in the suite upstairs. I saw a drunk swim across the pool on his way back to his room one night. When Van owned it the place wasn't as nasty as it is now. When I was younger it didn't bother me staying there, but I stay in Dodge now but hear good things about the one in Jetmore.

We used to hold family reunions at the Derrick in the eighties and early nineties. That and the old settlers reunion, we had some good times. I couldn't tell you what it's like now. I know it went to pot then they cleaned up but I haven't stayed there in 6 or 7 years.
