i have seen on forums people talking about force fetch but really never fully understand the concept , what does it basically do and how do you do it? thanks.

4 months old, could be loosing puppy teeth right now. Did you try real birds?

Labs loose there teeth around this time, and most really dont like to pick up hard bumpers at this time.

crazy that you say that because a couple of days ago one of my boys noticed that she had lost a tooth and since then has lost about three more and honestly i did not know that they loose teeth, called my dad and asked him about it and he said well yeah! usually how long or how many teeth do they loose , thanks for the info. and help.

She most likely will have her big girl teeth in by 6 months, If it was me it is a good time for some bird work.. You can always come back to retrieving later, but i would bet if she had a chance to retrieve a downed bird i would bet she wouldnt pass it up,

Forced Fetch is a process were you are teaching a dog a conditioned response, another words when you say fetch the dog doesnt think about it, just does it....

ok thanks for the help , next weekend i will try to do some bird work and try what you say and come back to it later ,thanks for the help.

BACK OFF, give that poor pup a chance to grow up. Let it be a puppy, nothing more than basic obedience and a lots of love and playing. Heck you have only had a short time, she doesn't even know she has a home yet. Let her get to know and bond with you for a spell......Bob

Read my mind, don't do any retrieve work at all for a couple weeks. And when you are, just do a few tosses, always stop when she wants more. You can do it several times a day. Just don't do it over and over. She will have a majic # she starts screwing around on you. If it is the third toss stop on two for awhile. I know every one likes to play play play. But It will pay off with the short sessions. Let her hold it while you sit down and rub and praise her, don't snatch at it or take it away right away. And if she is parading around do it in hall ways or a narrow area, with no distractions. They will do what you are going through every time when teething.

ok maybe some clarification might be needed I have not been pushing the pup to retrieve she is the first pup I've had that didn't show a bunch of interest in retrieving. But from what i've learned in the last few days about the teething process that explains alot, thats one reason i joined this forum is to get advice and learn things I'm by no means a expert on dog training and have alot to learn and sometimes i make mistakes but thats how you learn and try to prevent them the next time.

I am learning that every dog is different and you have to learn how to read each individual dog and take them along at thier on pace ,some dogs are gung ho and a 100 mphs and ready to go and some are at a slower pace. Along with this forum, books and magazines and talking to other people I am learning alot and will continue until i quit hunting and messing with bird dogs. Also i understand there are alot of different ways to train dogs and everybody has thier favorite way to do this I am just trying to compile a basic kowledge and training techniques to have the best bird dog and family friend i can have and with the help from this forum and other reading material hopefully i can do that, once again thak you all for your help.

thanks for the invite to ask questions i've only trained 3 dogs and they were naturally good dogs and i dont think i did alot to help them but by dog food and gas to go hunting everyweekend. Thats why i want to take a better aproach to this pup and my future dogs only makes sense you by a good dog ,you ought to give them the best oppurtunity to be the best gun dog they can be wether it be by yourself training them or a professional thanks for the info and help.
