Kansas birds bite back

Made it up to your great state for some bird hunting this past week. Hunted Norton and Oberlin. I was hunting a thick grassy draw, and my lab flushed a bird right from under her. It was big and gray, and at first glance I thought it was another hen. I quickly realized it was a hawk. When the dog came back, she had a bloody hole in her shoulder... I think the hawk was maybe eating something on the ground, and didn't want to give it up so easily :)

Unbelieveable

Just when you think you've seen it all. Wow! Did you have another dog or did you have to end your hunting trip early?

I also have a GSP. That lab was none to happy that she didn't get to hunt any more.

WOW! I hope that doesn't dampen her enthusiasm for flushing birds. I could see an experience like that causing some real bird-shyness in a pup.

Sorry to hear about your dog's pain, but that's an incredible story. I couldn't help but chuckle a bit at the irony of 2 predators crossing paths and something like this happening. Hope she heals quickly and forgets about the violent-natured bird of the KS prairie:D

I know, pretty crazy. She'll be fine. I cleaned it and wrapped it and let her hunt a little bit in a low grass field the next morning. She was still pushing hard, so I think she'll be fine.
