Question from novice trainer. My Brittany is learning to retrive. Did not ff

Did not even know about ff before i got started/ told you I was a novice.

He is doing a good job. Returns straight and fast. Always returns to front. Sits on command. Pretty good about waiting when told to stay/wait for vocal to fetch/get it.

BUT......He bobbles the bumper, holding it by one end...not in the middle. Got a dokens, which by its style/shape helps a bit.*

He was chewing on the feathers(on feather taped bumpers) but that has stopped. Now it is the juggling of the bumper.

QUESTION Do i continue practice with more emphasis on the hold...in a quiet, still ...no head moving, bobbling manner. any suggestions or advice on working toward a good solid hold. OR can some suggest something else.

Thanks for you help. Members of this site have really been helpful.

I'm assuming your dog is bobbling when you throw the bumper for a retrieve. Have you tried having your dog grab the bumper from your hand? If so how does your dog grab it that way?

Hmmm...sounds like a "puppy thing." I think he'll get over the bobble, poor hold issue.

Give him the bird/dummy in the middle and repeat "fetch." Repeat. And repeat again.

Soon he'll understand how to hold the bird. Try short retrieves, in a room or garage, perhaps only 5-6 feet. Correct when he holds it wrong. Repeat.

Works for me.
