I'm already planning hunting trips in my head. Guess I better start writing some of this down so I don't forget. I've been thinking lately about places I have seen birds at and places I've passed where there should have been birds at.

Last year opening day I went to SE KS. Never even saw A quail let alone a covey. I may head back down again this year just for the chance to drive by some of the old areas. I sure do like that part of Kansas.

Duck....I've got the fever too!
It's hard to not let my mind drift back to all the old coverts that held birds.

I am sorry that you had such poor luck last fall....PM me for some local tips.

Kansas is one of my all time favorite places to hunt and visit old friends and family. Hunted SE KS from 93' until 2007......had many great hunts and made some great friends! The bird numbers were often very good and 12+ covey days were common....Most all the farmers would let you hunt.....good habitat....mix of warm season grasses, plum thickets, osage fence lines and milo stubble.

After 2007......several weather events really hurt the quail and more recently the loss of thousands of acres of habitat have taken a toll as well.

Thanks for the offer highbrass. I actually had a pretty good quail season last year. Just not opening day. I didn't shoot many but that was some by choice.

I remember the good old days of SE KS. Had family down there and we would hunt their land and also neighbors land. Was some fantastic quail hunting back in the day. Not anymore tho.
