Indiana To Kansas - How Far West ?

I am thinking about making a trip from west central Indiana to Kansas to pheasant hunt. I've hunted Iowa before but I don't think its the place to go this year.

My question is how far west do I need to go into Kansas to strike a good balance between the drive time from Indiana and the number of birds to be found ?

I suspect I will be hunting mostly WIHA unless someone can point me to some private land owners who will allow hunting.

Please feel free to send me a private message or an eMail if you don't want to respond here.

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

I'd aim for an hour west of Salina (four hours west of KC on I-70) or further, then north or south. Had some buddies that hunted opening weekend just north of Salina and they claimed it was terrible, but I don't know how much they had to drink the night before.
