I found birds - plenty of them

I was doing some preseason scouting, spent about 10 hours total last weekend with boots on the ground running my dogs since Nebraska had the weekend off.

Went to WIHA #140 in Finney county and moved appx 200+ pheasants and about 74 lesser prairie chickens (Yes thats right 74...i Counted every single one). I could not believe all of the grasshoppers that were around providing an abundant food source and there were a couple areas with running water in the creek beds. There was lots of irrigated corn surrounding this WIHA as well. I also marked in my journal that I moved 6 covies of bobwhite quail and 3 covies of scalies.

I also went to WIHA #77 in Clark County to do some preseason scouting as its one of my favorite places to hunt. I ran into about 70 pheasants and moved over 100 prairie chickens in 2 different flocks. My dogs found 10 covies of quail on this place. As with Finney county, there was lots of standing water in the creek bottoms, abundant cover and lots of corn and milo around. Plenty of feed and ripe conditions for the birds. I cant wait to go out later in the season when I can actually shoot.

I didnt take any pictures, forgot too and was way too excited with all of the birds I was seeing. I scouted many more WIHA's but wont list their #'s and found even better results ;)

I hope the Ashland hotel is not overflowing with hunters opening day. Ive already got my reservations set.

Wish I could tag V-John in this post :D

You are wrong.

There are 75 lesser prairie chickens at WIHA #140

and 15 covies of quail on WIHA #77 in Clark County.

Why?

why would you pick the one county that I hunt in

now every Tom, Dick and Dumas will read this and head to Finney because they don't understand how dire it really is out that way

I was really looking forward to having #140 all to myself :D, takes some dog power to cover that Walk-In

KsHusker, If you don't mind sending me a PM regarding the real condition of Finney, it be much appreciated. It has been about six weeks since I was up there, little farther south and east but still in Finney :(

I'll second that entire area. Lots of birds there! Plenty of water, nice grass and the wheat looked great this year! Corn as tall as a house!

You could've helped me out and posted this on my thread. I'm lookin for new areas! I will have 20 hunters and 14 dogs af WIHA 140 on opening morning. Thank you so much for the help, you're a good guy!!:D

I'll pm V-John and see if he'll tag along with us. :10sign:

Thanx for the report, there are 29 of us heading that way for the opener, we have 1 good 3 legged dog, should limit out by 9 a.m, we will be in a 72 Plymouth Duster made into a pickup truck with a canvas tent built on back end, can't miss us!

I just canceled my trip to SD and talked the other ten guys into heading to Ashland Kansas. It took some persuading and these guys are pretty rough around the edges, so I hope I don't get my a$$ kicked if it doesn't work out, but I'm sure you wouldn't lead me down that road, now would you???

I'm on my way now. I'll be camping there so as to get first dibs for opener. After showing them this post I'm sure my wife and boss will understand.

Sounds like more than "Nebraska" had the weekend off, have you been putting magic mushrooms on your salad again?

Shane, you know I'm ignoring this thread too.

:D

Glad everyone gets my sarcasm :) And yes I must have had some pretty good mushrooms in my salad...ha.

Maybe in the next 2-3 years should conditions be right this might be a valid report minus the exact part of the state and WIHA #s. Hopefully everyone understands this is a joke

KSh is one smart dude.;) I think I'll try his strategy too. It's an area with ALL wild birds:thumbsup:

Okay, here it is.....take I-90 in SD to 37 north. Take 37 about 1/4 mile. Park in on either side of the road. Birds roost on both sides of the road each night. Nice wild birds!

If you're lucky enough you can get a room at the on the north side of the motel 6 and watch them come in every evening. lol :D:cheers:
