Hunting near Winterset, IA

My dad's a huge John Wayne fan and I want to combine a pheasant hunt with a visit to his birthplace in Winterset. Anybody have any suggestions? Could be just on the way to Winterset coming from Ohio.
 
If you want wild birds, you should go west or north of Winterset. Most of the good hunting is on private ground, not a whole lot of public ground. There are some preserves around Winterset and Des Moines area.
 
It depends on what you want. I know of a good preserve in Pleasantville, IA. Their rates are pretty reasonable, their website is bensinkfarms.com and then for public, a good investment would be the Iowa Sportsman's atlas.
