Hunting around Pierre, SD

I'm headed to SD the end of the month to hunt pheasants for the first time. I have wanted to do this for many years and now finally have the chance. I only have three days, so would love to pull off one good shoot but never hunting the area before, I'm looking for some input. At this point, I'm looking at public land. I would love some advice n that regard. I have been trying to follow up a couple private land leads with no luck. Can any one provide any guidance on public areas to try or have a private land contact? I would be most grateful!!

I have hunted that area many times and the public land can be good. If you are hunting a small group I would knock on some doors and ask to hunt and expect to pay a trespass fee. I would also get away from town, the closer you are to town the more they get asked and more likely it is that you will get turned down.

If it is just 2 or 3 of you hunting ditches next to food on gravel roads can be productive also.

I have paid anywhere from $20/day to $150/day per gun. After Oct you can usually find places for $100/day or less. I would ask some questions like, how much cover, when is last time it was hunted and how many hunters? Then of course , how would you hunt it and where would you start? The farmers even if they do not hunt know where the birds will be and how they will react when you head in after them. If a farmer let's us hunt for free we will go back and give him/her some money after we hunt (kinda base price on quality if birds and cover). Oh and get clear property lines, you don't want to end up on wrong farm. Good luck and I hope you and your group have a great time!

I have hunted public land to the East, South, and North of Pierre. Get yourself an atlas or go online to sdgfp website, I have also spent a lot of time on Google earth looking at the terrain and putting together a game plan when I have gone to new areas and it has worked well so that I am not wasting time. All can be accessed via phone so I would suggest downloading the atlas and g earth before you head out.
