Hugoton/Liberal trip report

Hey all,

Just returned from a weekend trip to the Hugoton area. Hunted Saturday (Brr 24 and 40 MPH wind in the morning) and Sunday (much nicer). Just me and my yellow lab Duke. We hunted a lot of small areas since it was just the two of us and limited out both days. Actually we were done by 11:30 on Sunday with a double to close it out. Lots of birds and missed a bunch on Sat due the wind/aim;). All in All not a bad weekend trip just a long drive from Celina, Tx on Friday afternoon with I35 all messed up due to snow and ice and wrecks.

Stayed the first night in Liberal in some no-tel hotel since i didn't get in until 1:30 AM. Stayed in Hugoton at the B&B and was able to get a room on the north side (newer) and it was not bad at all ~$48.00 per night and they let you keep the dog inside.

Stopped down at the local watering hole (Barbs Den) and caught up with some local folks that let me hunt some private land and had a couple of cold ones after the hunt.

Sorry I didn't have the camera but the proof is in the freezer:)

You guys are tough from Texas

I can't imagine hunting in that wind with that wind chill. Did you also get into some quail, or are we talking just roosters? PS. For one person, a lab is hard to beat. They can dig them out of that nasty stuff I'm sure.

I saw at least 3-4 coveys of quail each day but since I was using #4's i didn't shoot at any. Duke would get really interested in the quail but only after they busted, I can only assume that his nose is not sensitive enough for quail that are setting vs. pheasants that are moving

Glad you had a good trip. We were there the 19th-21st. Got access to about 1,000 additional acres of private land through a friend. Thank you gifts to landowners are going to be a large expense this year.:)

I will NEVER stay at the B&B in Hugoton again. The Inn Keeper is a Class A Ashhole. I would rather sleep in my truck than give him any of my money. Next time you need a place to stay there try the Flamingo. The experience is much better.

If you need a body shop there for any reason I would NOT recommend Mike's.

If you are staying in LIberal try the Ranch Motel on the south side. They have redone the rooms with nice furniture and flat screens. A single is $40 + tax if you negotiate nicely with them. There is also a city park next door to walk the pup in.

When in Liberal the best places to eat are Billie's Blue Duck BBQ, Salty Dog, and Cattlemens II.
