I take 1 gal paint can and take the lid and mount a receptical box and mount a porcelain light socket and low profile 40-100 watt bulb, cut some slots in the can and mount it 6 inches down from the top of the roof, run the cord out the back to an outlet. I use wing nuts to fasten to the dog house (1/4 20) on the lid to make for easy bulb change. This design or some variation has been around for years and does work.

pics please?

I will post some when I build a few more by the end of next week. I will take them in a series as I put them together. Very simple after you do one.

great idea does it get to hot to put strw in the doghouses also or is it fine to still use some straw

thanx, I have heard of them, I have seen factory ones for sale but kind of pricey? Pics will help if I decide to build one?

I keep straw in my dog houses so far without any FIRES. Heat can get out through the slots. I will set one up and lay it on the straw for an hour or so and see what happens. 40 watt bulbs is what I use but some of my buds have used up to 100 watt and radiant ceramic screw in elements without any problems that I know of.

i have used the infrared bulbs like what they use in farrowing houses for piglets and you definately dont want to keep it over straw no fires yet but it does get real hot

yep I use them in my brooders for quail and phes and those 250 watt bulbs will cook them if it is not set high enough. got some quail under them as we speak. I use dimmers on them.

never thought about a dimmer i just hook them up into a heat lamp and used them that way until I wnt to feed and smelled hot straw one day

I have had these type explode in my bird boxes. Gets glass all over. I like that can Idea, it would keep the glass contained if one broke. Maybe you could put steel screen in them as well.

I like the idea also my only worry is if we make them to comfortable they may never want to get out of bed again

heater for dog

did the paint can and it works and need to know the temp of 40 watt bulb that it is good for. dog house is insulated [1 inch Styrofoam all around] and doorway has a flap of carpet. dog house has an attached covered porch for summer.

do not use plastic light socket for safety positively. I have straw in the dog house. any questions email: washaple@gmail

You might try using an elect timer, set it to turn on for 30 minutes every two hours.I keep wood chips over the pig pad, dogs love it and keep warm
for bulbs wood chips work great ive used a 125 watt heating bulb
