Hen numbers

I have been hunting since I could walk and I always remember seeing more hens then roosters. This year It seems like the hen numbers are down. That has me worried about next year. Hunted WIHA in Jewell Co today shot 3 roosters and only saw 3 hens. It seems like that has been the case all year.

I had that same feelin earlier in the year, we hunted around mankato and the first 2 days all we saw were roosters. But then the next 2 days we saw about 100 hens and maybe 10 roosters so i dont know what to think

The dog was really birdy all day and not alot flew? maybe late season? Or maybe hens are running. Not normal from my experience.

From my trips in Ellsworth County up to Graham County I have seen a very healthy hen population. I think that they will be okay! The hens were holding extremely tight but those roosters ran like the wind!

I've seen loads of hens in the month of January and really haven't been out much. There will be plenty of them for spring breeding. I sure hope someone is working on thinning out a few of the roosters in NC KS this weekend!

Just remember that a lot of hens does not always translate to more birds next fall. Pray for moisture and no hail. One place I hunt was knocked completely flat by hail 2 yrs. ago. The land owner did not see a bird. This year saw 50-60 birds there and who knows what I did not see. Three or four hens that clutch out 3 times can make a huge difference.

Hens Abound

I have seen lots of hens in NW.

Well it must be just me. I do usually hunt in small groups of 1 or 2. Maybe that has something to do with it.

That is interesting. From what I have seen in SE SD and NW IA there seems to be a high number of roosters.

Back from SW and saw about 8-10 hens to roosters. Should be good for carry over if the storm didn't hurt them. Some bunches of 15-20 nothing but hens that I could make out. Hope everyone is careful on the ice and snow.

Don't lose touch over the off season. We need to keep on top of this walk in topic.
