well, this is my 1st post on here, but i frequented the old argus site alot in the past.

got on here to see if ol zeepo was on here, but i don't see him as a registered user.

good to see some of the old users on here.

A hello to Maynard. It's been awhile and I hope you're keeping Dodge in check.

I'd be on here more if I lived in an area conducive for upland hunting. I reside in SW MO, once a quail haven, now a desert for quail. They're slowly making a comeback, but not near where they were 30+ yrs ago.

Been hunting SW KS with my dad since I was 5 or so. Hunting pretty much the same ground the whole time. We're blessed to have a farming friend who is like family to us and allows us hillbillies to come west each year to hunt.

Anyway, since I don't have any local hunting info, if any of ya need info on fishing around here, I can prolly help. Table Rock, Beaver Lake, Grand Lake, etc.

Also... anyone on here homebrew?

Have a good one

No, I don't make homebrew, but I'd sure be willing to try some;) Welcome to the site. I think you'll like it more than the old pheasant hunting site we all used to use. I sure hope those quail do make a good comeback in SW MO.......well, everywhere for that matter. Quail hunting is my favorite when I can find a few around. Pheasant hunting will work as a good substitute until the quail population recovers.

Good to have you here. I quit trying to keep the rowdies in check, let the young guys do it.

My beloved Duke is no longer with me and I planned to be without a canine friend for awhile, then along came Murry.

You need to stop by when you are this way. Bet you will be this way before I am your way. I am always good for a sarsaparilla at the Longbranch.

Sure good to see you back.

Maynard & Murry

Maynard, whereabouts is your place from Dodge?

We hunt north and west of Howell. We usually stay in a hotel on 54 there in town.

Glad you got you a new pup. I can't view the pics due to work filters, but I'm betting he's a dandy.

See my post down in the classifieds. I've got a couple gsp's I need to find a good hunting home for. Ask around out there and see if anyone is interested. I'm letting them go for free if someone will work with them.

They're not problem dogs. They just don't get the time they deserve.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum here, I do more reading than posting.... Where abouts in SW MO are you? I live just north of Webb City/Joplin. Dove hunted on Talbot Conservation area this morning. Typically get a limit in an hour or two, this morning I didn't even pull the trigger until I was walking back to the truck and dropped one. I think a combination of cooler weather and hunting the wrong field was the problem. Did hear some shots in the distance, but not like it usually is. Going to try Shawnee Trail Conservation area tonight, just to see whats up there. Heard quail whistling all over this morning, but everybody says these areas get hit hard when the season starts.

Can't wait for pheasant season to come, only problem is I'm getting married the weekend before in Texas, flying to Jamaica, and will miss opening day. Plan on driving all night from the Houston airport Saturday to get to Great Bend for Sunday morning.

Maynard, is the Bad Habit bar and grill still out there in Dodge? I lived there the summer of 2002 for an internship with Broce Manufacturing, every night I would eat at either the Bad Habit or the steakhouse that was in the mall, I think it closed down? Peppercorns a few times as well.

cheesy-- i'm about 30-40 miles south of ya, south east of neosho out in the country.

i've quail hunted talbot a few times, but didn't see much. you're right, it gets hit hard. you might head north to bushwacker. i've never hunted it (and I'm sure it gets pounded too), but i've heard of guys doing well up there.

i agree about the dove. a little cool this morning. i'm going to go out this evening and see if they're flying.

i know you were asking Maynard, but i've never heard of either of those places. we usually eat at applebees or montana mikes. a couple yrs ago we hit a new little steak place in Cimarron. Don't know if it's still open, but it wasn't too bad at all, especially for Cimarron.

congrats on the marriage.

Welcome T Haus!

I live in NW Arkansas, so I know what it's like to struggle finding native birds.
I am trying to establish some native quail on my 50 acres.

Like you, I look forward to my Kansas trips.

Lefty,

hey lefty -- i used to work in Rogers. I worked down there for a couple yrs and then transferred back to MO in November.

yep, when i think of NW Arkansas, I think of great fishing, excellent deer hunting. sure don't think of quail hunting.

i think about the quail we had on our place when i was kid. 6-8 coveys at least (160ac). you try and think what is different now vs back then. only thing i can see is loss of surrounding habitat (more people moved in) and just plain old better job of cleaning the place up. when you have to fix or build fence, it sure is easier when the briars are gone, but it just kills the habitat. no more edge feathering, etc.

Missouri is preaching habitat, habitat, habitat. They released a study that said reducing predators did nothing for the population.

anyway, good luck with your project. it's time consuming but the self reward is priceless.

nice!!

i've never shot a deer. dad didn't hunt and we were always in KS pheasant hunting opening weekend of deer season in MO.

Just back on the computer for a few moments then headed to the ranch to try Murry on his first dove. Last night there were lots of dove at the water holes, along with some lesser prairie chicken at one.

T Haus, I did send you a PM about a post over on UJ.

The old Bad Habits(the old Pizza Hut in Dodge) was torn down recently due to street widening on Wyatt Earp Blvd, but they are building a new building on the back of the lot. Peppercorns went into bankruptcy and Mike Casey of Casey's Cowtown Club bought it and changed the name to Delmonicos. I don't know much about either one, since my wife and I don't really go to the bar and grills, shoot we don't eat out much at all except Mexican after church on Sunday, or the Pizza Hut buffet during the week. Ham's Bar on the north end of town is rumored to have the best ribeyes in town. I have had his ribeyes a couple of times at catered events and they were very good. I think the new casino has an opening date in mid November or early December. I have not really kept up with it, since I only gamble on sure things(my ranch and livestock?).

Better get a shotgun, plenty of shells and Murry loaded and hit the dove.

Maynard & Murry

hey maynard, how did the dove shooting turn out??

i didn't get a pm from you so i don't know if maybe I don't have something turned on on this site?

do you want to try and send it again?

thanks for the link Maynard. I tried to register on there to contact Blair, but it says that registrations are turned off by the admin. Are you registered on there?
if so, send him a link to my classified thread, or get an e-mail from him and I'll contact him directly.

thanks pard

edit: i just sent the admin an e-mail requesting registration. says it could take up to a week for him to turn it on...??

I am here, just been reading and have just registered. Early season may not be too good even with the bird numbers up. My friend was out to look at his land last weekend and the crops are not even close to be harvested. He did not think much would be out for opening weekend, maybe some beans but not the milo or corn. Good to hear you are looking for me.

zeepo

Welcome back Zeepo. In my recent scouting trip to the western half of Kansas I noticed the same thing. The crops look like they will be late this year and there are crops all over the place. I found some places with decent birds and other places I didn't notice any birds around at all. One of my favorite places has milo about chest high and weeds even higher. That is one dirty field and will definitely hold a few limits this season.

In the last 2 weeks I have traveled to Salina, Grand Island NE, Fairmont MN and Cedar Rapids IA. I saw some beans coming out and some silage corn but nothing else. Looks like late season success like last year. Where I hunt near Hays milo did not come out year until around Thanksgiving but it was pretty wet also. May be dryer this year. My friend said that last week he say a lot of young birds that had no color on them yet. His 80 year old uncle had a birthday party so there was a lot of farmers there they and all said the same thing that the birds had another hatch in late August early Sept.
