Got my 2013 sd hunting atlas today

well for all you guys that always ask when do the SD atlas come out & wear can i get them questions ETC. they are now out & a simple call to the SD game & fish or a few clicks & a few min on your computer will get you the 2013 SD hunting atlas on the sd game & fish web site... you can also request many other regs & info if you would like they only sent me the ATLAS at a quick glance at my turkey hunting areas & a few areas i may someday hunt pheasant & prairie grouse look to all still remain in WIA so thats...

there is some changes to the map the color of the background is a funky gray green color & hard to see some forest lands & a few WPAs but no big deal but they really didnt need to mess with the color scheme???

its here boys start your 2013 SD hunting trip planing today!!!

Looks like the SD website has changed since i last ordered the Pheasant Packet. Is that whole packet still available or is it the Atlas only?
Can you provide a link please?
Thx

The atlas is awesome.....just one question. How are the WPA areas for pheasants. Have never been there so I'm guessing their just little potholes surrounded by cattails and grasses.

WPA's do hold a lot of pheasants but to say a pot hole with cover around it is a VERY SIMPLE way to say it. First the cover is usually VERY heavy and some have small lakes so hunting can be very tough but are worth a look. After a good solid freeze up the hunting in the cat tails can be great--just be sure the ice is solid--falling thru can be dangerous for both you and your dog and at least a hunt ending cold wet deal

If i'm overstepping my bounds with all these questions just let me know. Just trying to get a lay of the land/terrain. Other than crep land i'm assuming most public land is just brushy, cedar filled old farmsteads.

What kind of terrain are the school/public lands??? Are they managed or just let to grow on their own?

Once again I aplologize if this has been reduntant to long time forum members.

no biggie if you take a few min & log onto the SD game & fish web site you will see there is a interactive map you can view... try it out & you will see all the lands in the SD PUBLIC LAND ATLAS are on there interactive map & you can also get a aireal pic of the lands & see what the lands hold... or you can always just look the areas up on google???

school lands are managed for cattle well managed for ranchers to rent & then run cattle on the free range... all everybody said about school lands last year was they were all grazed short or hayed... they are not managed for hunting only...

the cedar field brushy old farmsteads comment is just to vague... & in short no they are not what you described the public lands are all different there are WIAs WAs WPAs NG & NF all have different cover & habitat some managed for deer some for prairie grouse some for pheasant ETC.

find a good traditional hunting are & find the public lands in the area & look them up prior to ur visit via pics maps & or phone calls...

just got to do a little home work & you will figure some things out as you go... there is more to scouting then picking out & looking at different colored tracts of land on a map thow...

Theres school grounds in every county. They can be range/pasture, or they can be a corn/bean rotation, or sunflowers/wheat, depending on where they are located in the state, and what the best income available for rent, which helps pay school taxes in each county..

You can download an Android or IPhone App for your smartphone that will help immensely, or you can upload the maps into your Garmin vehicle navigation also..

I hardly use the paper map, but use my smartphone almost all the time, because you can view it in real geography..

i will carry printed aerial pics of the lands i expect to hunt paper maps & pics always work ive been in many many areas with no bars for cell phone service...

not carrying paper maps is way to new school for me... just read about the exact issue in i think pointing dog journal mite of been gun dog??? a teacher asked if he should still teach map reading skills to kids nowdays with all the smart phones & apps ETC. very cool article

i always have paper versions of all the states public land atlases i plan to hunt i even ask for 2 in case i spill or draw on 1 atlas hard to draw on a smart phone lol

got to have map reading skills

I've been using Google Earth in conjunction with the atlas to give me rough idea of the terrain. That's where I came up with the Cedar filled ravines/brushy areas. Which is typically what I hunt here in SW Ohio. It's hard to tell what's around the other lands (WPA and School/Public) due to when Google last updated the satellite view. Thank for all the advice and I have a pretty good idea where to start.

I probably should get another one because I've been writing distances from where I'm staying to small towns where I want to scout and other tracts I want to look at if time is available.
