Goodbye '24-'25 Non-Season

A poor, nearly birdless season. After decades of KS hunting, it's a wonder at this point we even have a pheasant season. Maybe the KDWP should do as it has done w fall turkey: just eliminate the season. I have no answers.

If it wasn't on private it's very very tough anymore. I spent almost $500 just in licenses to drive out of KS to go hunt another state this year. Next year will be the same except when I can get on private ground.

There are places in the state that have significantly more birds than where you hunt, based on your reports.

I hate to hear this. This was the best year of hunting I've had in at least 6 years, maybe longer. I don't take my connections and private land access for granted, but I shot 10-15 birds on public land alone. It's tough for an outside guy to get permission but I know lots of landowners that never turn anyone away. Maybe I still live in Mayberry and this isn't the case east in Central and Eastern Kansas.
I'm heading out tomorrow for the last day with 3 other guys and I will only be disappointed if we don't bag 10+ birds. It's crazy to have this type of expectation anytime in January, especially on the last day of the season.

Guess I'm just hunting in the wrong part of the state. <big frustrated sigh>

Sorry Britchaser.hoping for the best in 25.

Wish I could have gotten out a handful of more times but life got in the way. This year went by to fast.

They all go by too fast anymore. I had a much better season this year. Quail numbers were just as good as last year, probably even a little better. Pheasants also improved. If can get some properly timed moisture this year I'm excited about next year. Wish I'd been able to get out at least one more time. 21 days with shells in the gun and dogs on the ground starting with chickens in September; same as last year. I thought maybe I'd make it to 22 or 23, but I always seem to lose a weekend in January to weather.

Today was a great last day of the season. We started hunting at 10:15, and got skunked on our first spot. Not even a hen. The 2nd and 3rd spots were both disappointing and only shot 1 bird. Determined quickly as the temperature continued to rise, the birds were not in CRP next to grain. The next 2 spots were CRP next to wheat stubble and finally had better luck. Finished our day ambush hunting weed patches near grain and wheat stubble trying to get the last 3 birds for those needing to fill their individual limits. We accomplished this at 3:45. Total walking was ~7 miles and finished the day hunting in a T-shirt.
I am not ready for this season to be over. It's been the most memorable season in my hunting lifetime. I've hunted more than i ever have, I have lost 28# since opening weekend. I have laughed and cussed at myself more than I ever have. I only missed 2 weekends of hunting all year, and my dog is on fire right now. Her range has been near perfect, tracking is really good, finding and retrieving has improved beyond my expectations. I can't wait for next year. I hope the birds can have another great recovery year since there are so many more hens to lay eggs. We saw at least 40 hens today.

That is a real bummer BC. Sneak up here next year some weekend next season and well get you birds. If the habitat is not there, the birds will not be there. Creation of habitat can produce amazing results.

I just returned from spending the last week of season near you. I didn't know until I just looked at your profile. Our usual trip to the south of you was still covered with snow and mud. Although we have some pretty good private land there, we knew we couldn't get to most of it. We were lured to your part of the state from a friend who was there when the snow was on. He sent me the WHIHA locations where he had done quite good. So, we figured with his few spots along with the spots that we would surely find, we'd be in like Flyn!!
1st day we hunted his spots, saw 10 hens and 2 roosters both of which flushed wild on private ground. Passed up a shot at a bird that I could not see any color on. My buddy said it looked like a rooster. I did also buy the sun was just at the wrong angel, so let it slide. Dogs bumped a covey on a nice looking crp field on private ground. There was a sign on it that said no hunting without permission.
2nd day drove all day trying to find anything that looked like it would hold a bird. Marked a couple marginal spots that might hold some quail but nothing that had any real pheasant habitat. Went back and hunted those with no luck.
3rd day back to his spots. I shot a rooster over a good point. Saw what the same few hens and had a few points. Went back to a small marginal piece and kicked up two quail, one of which I killed. 3rd day drove 30 miles to the east. Snow and mud. We drove all day trying to find a place that we could get to without any luck. Drove to a fish and wildlife area that was managed for pheasants. The only way to sign it was on the net or a phone number. The biologist said we might have some luck in a certain area. But failed to mention that the road to it was closed. The only road to it was pure mud. We went to another area and tried to sign in with no luck with the phone or phone #. We drove the 30 plus miles back and began knocking on doors looking for the owner of the CRP with the sign no hunting without permission. About dark we found his nephew. He called his uncle who owned it, and he turned use down.
I won't bore you with the rest of the trip but those were the highlights. I kept a rough count of WHIHA nonproductive ground. It was pretty close to 10-1 nonproductive places. We drove over 100 miles and looked at dozens of WIHA's. If you figured it by the acre, it was probably around 500 acres nonproductive to 80 or so productive. Probably a lot better for deer hunting. Our friend who did pretty good probably hit the snow and cold right when all the birds were forced into CRP. Not at all against WHIHA just my experience.

I am on a few Kansas Facebook hunting groups and have seen several positive posts regarding hunting there. Must be your spots in particular not producing in your area. Maybe you should rethink where you hunt there?

The bird numbers where I hunt in NW Kansas were much better than the last couple of years when they basically didn't exist. One thing I noticed was a lot more grasshoppers this summer than usual, just thick with them, which I'm guessing helped more chicks survive.

I've hunted the same area for around the same amount of time the last 5 years and here is a rough estimate of the birds I've bagged.

24 - 10
23 - 4 (got 3 on the last day of the season and was ecstatic)
22 - ZERO
21 -11
20 - 8

Fall of 22 into winter of 23 was really bad due to the drought. I don't think I fired my gun more than 3 times that season and didn't kill any. I was pleasantly surprised at the bounce back this year.

Is this public or private land you are referring to?

Both. I hunt about 50/50 private vs WIHA. I didn't see any birds on the private land in 22/23 but randomly killed 3 birds at my WIHA honey hole on the last day of the season. (The WIHA Honey hole is about 3 miles away)
