Good quail hunt

Normally I'm a pheasant guy, nothing like the rush of a rooster pheasant! But, yesterday I went on the best quail hunt I've ever been on, moved 10 coveys in a half day. The coveys were big and the dogs were into birds for pretty much 5 hours straight. Our shooting wasn't good and we didn't put many in the bag but man, was it fun! We (buddy and I) don't normally target quail but with the way our pheasant population is going we may need to switch gears and become more quail guys. We have two young pups and it sure was fun watching them with all the bird contacts.

I’m the same way a pheasant guy. Sat. We got into 5 coveys I think and another one Sunday. One covey had to be 50 birds and another one close to it. I think this is the best year I’ve seen for quail in the areas I hunt since when the population exploded coming out the last drought in 14, 15. I’m excited for pheasants next year in the area we hunted last weekend too. We saw quite a few. Was quite a bit of new crp on the corners of the big circles that should be grown in next year.
Congratulations on your weekend hunt sounds like it was a phenomenal day.

You actually saw some landowners putting some CRP corners back to grass? (I'm asking this question in amazement) -- in large areas of the state these little patchworks of habitat with the occasional 80, 40, quarter etc of crp or a close by pasture that was well managed helped to support the large populations of birds we enjoyed for a long time. Other factors at play of course - but that was a big one IMO.

From what I saw and heard they are.
Various members of my wife’s family. 3 years ago one added a second corner to a big half circle. This last year a couple others added a second and third corner to a big full circle and a third and fourth corner to each of a couple of small circles. They and others around hay graze what allowed but there is more crp grass around than post 2020.
The second day I asked the guy I was hunting with. He’s all in on triticale on the stuff he manages. I asked about crp after seeing a couple other big circles planted while driving to where we were hunting. He said quite a bit is going in around him.

The stuff I hunted Sunday that area the corners were grass. We were right in the middle of about 30000acres of circles with corner a good chunk in grass.
