Getting Closer

Bro in law made hotel reservations. Called my recent hunting buddy last night and asked if he was going with, or staying here in Missouri to deer hunt that weekend. Heard him ask his 11 year old son "you want to go to Kansas pheasant hunting?", response I hear in the background "why sure". Wife isn't pregnant this year, so she'll likely tag along as well. Dad's getting over a hernia operation from a couple weeks ago, but the doctor said pheasant hunting isn't off-limits. He is on an 8 lb restriction, tried to use that to justify a new classic SXS shotgun, but mom wasn't having anything to do with that.

The birds might not be there, but we sure will.

An elk in the hand is worth two in the bush. :)

Opening day saw an ear flick at 50 yards in the black timber. Decided it was a cow and was getting ready to shoot when I saw an antler glint in the sun. Spent the next 10 minutes playing cat and mouse trying to determine if it had the legal 4 points on one side. Finally decided it was only a 3 point, but by then the cow had moved off and I didn't get a shot.

Second day my brother in law got a cow which I helped pack out, 4.3 miles as the crow flies from camp, think the GPS showed it as close to 8 miles on the trails back.

Walking some more timber had a spike at 30 yards that didn't know I was anywhere around. Saw another couple of cows, but they were moving through the timber and couldn't get a shot. Ended up seeing about 10 elk total.

Two years in a row I've been on them in the black timber, but just couldn't seal the deal. Its a learning experience for sure, not like sitting on the stand here at home waiting on a whitetail to walk by. Can't wait for next year to try it again. Brother in law has beat the odds and shot one 3 years in a row, DIY on public ground.

Sounds like a fun trip, we are getting hammered by a big snow storm here at the moment so the second season hunters should have good chances once it stops. I didn't draw a tag for the area I wanted this year but still have a lot of meat from the one I got last year.

It snowed around 6 to 8 inches here in Colorado Springs. The second rifle season starts this weekend. Should be awesome for elk/deer hunting. I know the mountains got even more.
