Nothing special here, just a bit of good news to report (there's been so little this season I felt it necessary to share). There is a WIHA spot not all that far from my house that I've used for exercise each season when I couldn't afford to drive out west. I've never seen a bird on the place and I've hunted once per season for the past 4 or 5 seasons.
I woke my son up and told him I was going to run the dogs at said place. He said, "Dad, there's never any birds there. Why don't we go somewhere else?" "Well buddy, we're saving up our "points" with momma so we can go out west next week" I told him.
We walked damn near the entire 160 acres and had found only a hatched egg (good sign) and a gut-shot 4 point buck that the coyotes had cleaned up. Of course we could leave this rotting treasure in the field to continue to rot, so it's hanging from our back porch![Big grin :D :D](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
Anyway, just as we were about to the truck, Tate located a strong 20-bird covey. I was in the timber and didn't fire a shot. The dogs and I worked a few singles and I attempted one very quick timber shot, but didn't connect with the bird, only branches.
Neat thing about not harvesting any is that there is still a big covey of birds, most of which didn't even hear a shot when I flushed them. Chances are they'll be in the same spot next time (or close at least).
