First Steps for a good pointer

What do you guys consider the first things you do when training a GSP? I have started off with getting her used to her name (Sage) and things like "no", "break" (which is outside), and "come". Granted I am working on behaving in the house, but can I introduce the "wing on a string" at this point? She is 13 weeks old.

I have boughten "The Perfect Start" DVD and watched the beginning of it, but they primarily start right out in the field. They begin by introducing name, etc., with a check cord. I have introduced the name which she knows well, and the other commands no, break, are getting close to perfection. What is the next step? Mind you, I live in the city, and dont have access to large fields for training, besides public ground that catches a lot of heat at this time of the year.

I'm definitely no expert but with my pup I started introducing him to woah command at 9 weeks. I used a leash to keep him steady and did this every day. After one week he already started to hold on his own and I slowly began to walk around him. If he moved I placed him back to his woah position, but I only do this for 5 minutes at a time. He is 14 weeks old and now he will hold even if I walk into a different room. To release the dog I give him the come command and he runs to me with lots of praise i don't use treats. I also did this on a small end table. You can also do some fetching in a controlled area but make it a lot of fun. You should already be doing the wing on a string but don't overdo it especially if the dog isn't pointing it. Most important have fun, that is why I started so early because training should be fun for you and your dog. Good luck

Just a few things that have worked for me: Use hand signals (arm extended or raised for "come") around the house and yard. The signals will transfer to the field. Play "fetch" a little in the yard to develop retrieving. When a bird is down in the field, ask the dog to "fetch" thereby keeping the commands consistent. Leash walks are a great time to teach "whoa." Once the pup is old enough to go out in the country, for gunfire acclimation take a firearm on walks and while pup is out ahead randomly fire a shot once in a while but act as if nothing has happened -- just keep walking and react in no way. The dog will assume the occasional loud noise is a feature of the fun and freedom of being in the field. Good luck and good hunting.

the best thing over anything is to hsve that pup love you to death. you can do all the training but that pup has to love you. I would get her house trained first and obedience training. woah you can introduce but remmember shes super young and has a long time to learn that
