First birds of 2025

Gus and I were a good team today. I must shoot better when I am dry than when wet. I did have one get up, right when I had something in my eye (likely bluestem). I pulled-up and just couldn't see well, I shot, the bird was still going, I couldn't see well enough to try again, pulled the gun down, there were feathers in the air and the bird still going. This tall grass, when you find yourself walking into the direction it is leaning, you get poked in the eye and in the nose like a COVID test every few minutes it seems, not enjoyable. Gus was locked on 2 of the roosters and he found all 3 before I got to them...no runners, all DOA. 4 shells for 3 birds, I will take that everyday.
I hope everyone has similar luck today....a good omen for 2025.

Very. Nice Remy !!! Happy New Years , look like the weather is likey changing for this weekend , will you make it out with the white stuff on the ground ?
Thanks. No, I don't think there will be any snow bird hunting for me this season. Season in Iowa ends on the 10th, that is a Friday, so this coming weekend will be the last for me. There is not a good chance currently for any precip in our 10 day forecast.

Nice hunt! I’m in Central Iowa and we’re supposed to get a couple of inches of snow tomorrow so I’m planning to head out. You must be in the NW part of the State since you’re not expecting any snow.
I got out this afternoon on some public and got 1 “surprise” bird. My dog and I were walking a mowed path next to crp so we could work back into the wind since the birds in this area are typically very skittish. About 1/2 way down the path the dog dove into the cover and about caught the rooster. It was over once he got airborn. Only saw a few hens the rest of the afternoon.

3 guys 6 dogs 90 minutes and limited out. Nice way to end 1/1/25.

While living in Dallas/Fort Worth it tried to golf every new years day ....
.glad I got away from that.

Well, it seems I was incorrect when asked if I would be hunting in snow here.....this is this morning. About an inch. Temps will not crack 30° for a while, so it should still be here this weekend.
