Finally! A mixed bag!

Headed west on I-80 to some of my ground I've not hunted since the 2011 season and had a blast!

12 roosters, 40+ hens, and two coveys of quail approaching 25-30 bobwhites in total. We have a rule that we don't shoot quail until we count a 9th bird, which resulted in three trigger pulls and three bagged.

We had our opportunities at 6 roosters, but managed just 5 today on less than stellar shooting.

How fun are quail!?!

awesome job. this was on public or private land? I'm assuming you were in iowa.

Yes, Iowa and private. Near Elk Grove.

Nice. How is public hunting/wild birds there? Ive read that it can be pretty good. I live in ny but i have a dream of driving out west and hunting. Iowa i believe would be the closest to me.

Public hunting in Iowa can be good. While I've only hunted private this year, I do have 3-5 public spots that I can usually find some success within. If you've a decent dog, and good strong legs "made for walkin'", you'll find birds.

Awesome!!! I need to try and get to southern Iowa for a mixed bag hunt. Not many, but there are some quail to be found. I miss quail from preserve hunting the most. The preserve I hunted had a wild covey.
