I am looking for some clarity here from those with experience. What are the differences between these:

Field Trail:

NAVHD Trail:

Hunt Test:

and what clubs/associations can sponsor/host them?

Thanks
Greg

I'll give the basics on trials and hunt tests. The NAVDA guys and retriever guys will have to fill in what I can't.

Field trials: Dogs are judge for their performance. They are competing against the other dogs in the trial. There's only one winner. And there's second place and third place. All kinds of organizations run trials. AKC, NSTRA, Breed clubs.

Hunt test: Dogs are judge for their performance. The judges score them and they are competing to achieve high scores. Any and all dogs can achieve a qualifying score (but usually just some). Hunt tests are run by multiple retriever groups and the AKC.

NAVHDA: They use the hunt test scoring model.

Those are the basics. Hopefully people can fill you in on more.

Hunt tests evaluate a dog against a predetermined standard.

Field trials are generally considered more competitive as dogs and handlers compete against each other.

Hunt tests generally are considered less competitive as dogs and handlers compete against a standard as opposed to other dogs/handlers.

Field trials the judges are typically on horse back and the dog run in pairs or braces. These are run on predetermined courses trying to locate either planted birds or native birds. Puppy course are generally a loop often ending where you started, older dogs typically have a different starting and ending point. Handlers can either be on foot or horse back. Different level of field trials depending on age. In my opinion field trials are very political in nature and sometimes its not the best dog who wins but best rep of handler.....
