Have trained and hunted since 1969 several pointing breeds and retrievers. Still hunt a variety of game birds from the east coast west to Arizona and Idaho.
With advancing age have purchased an English Cocker, now 5 months old. Will be hunting grouse, pheasant, woodcock and even quail with her. Have her reliably retrieving. (Note that this pup was actively swimming at 10 1/2 wks). Breed is highly active, intelligent, athletic, and biddable yet with a mind of their own. However, the breed cannot withstand a “heavy hand”.
What are suggested methods and techniques of training an English Cocker that provide consequences for incorrect behavior (e.g., not coming on command which is big concern near roads and also chasing deer, etc).
