What do you guys do with your hunting dogs now the hunting seasons is over?

I'm thinking of jointing some of the hunting dog clubs in Colorado may be do some bird dog challenge hunt or field trial test etc, I never done it before but like to give it a try, I think it will be fun for the dogs.

What kind of dogs do you have? There are lots of options available and field trials and hunt tests are a great opportunity to keep your dogs in shape and keep them on birds.

I work mine a bit after work several times per week, then we go on a long working hike at least once over the weekend. When I get home after he's been fed & we're done outside, Hank joins me in the house (and we always refresh obedience training at every opportunity. Apart from that, he goes with me wherever a dog is allowed. Hank is more than my bird dog; he's my buddy.

Try Colorado Gun Dog Club, it is for pointers and setters. Their fields are located in Strasburg so it is close to Denver. It is a good group of guys/gals who work with you to train your dog. They hold about 6 field trials starting now throught June. Check out their web site.

I run my Weim in AKC hunt tests in the spring and fall. Gives us something to do and it points out things that we need to work on. Also, we are members of the Colorado Gun Dog Association - they have Chukar Trials almost every month.

Local AKC hunt tests are posted on the Field Trial News website.

We also head out to hunting preserves to keep our "skills" sharp. ;-)
