Dremel for dog nails

Anyone using a Dremel for their dogs nails? If so, what attachment are you using? Sanding wheel or diamond nail grinder?

I'm thinking about upgrading from the hand nail clippers.

All I use. 80 grit sanding wheels that go over the rubber drum bits, and buy a few packs of them at a time. Each wheel lasts maybe a half dozen sandings. If I end up doing nails every other week instead of weekly, I can buzz off the long bit of the nail in one 2-3 second press. Once I get close to the quick, I use short taps to shape the nail and hit the outer edge of the quick to push it back. Keeps the heat down to prevent pain. Chipped/frayed edges on nails have gone down significantly since I can ease those off with the sander so nothing gets caught when they run. I love the ability to shape the nail as well. If it gets a bit thick on the top I round that off so there isn't a big flat spot with an angle when the foot rolls over the nail.

Mines a dremel lite 5 speeds usb rechargeable battery life is great just sanding drums some use diamond but some say diamond generates to much heat dogs dislike

Yes if your dog trusts you. Variable speed cordless HF with whatever they call the sandpaper wheels that go on the rubber doughnut. Way better than the sharp corners traditional nail cutters leave.

I was going to buy a new cordless one but then remembered that I have an old corded variable speed Dremel that I bought when my oldest son was in Boy Scouts over 25 years ago. It was buried in my garage but I pulled it out last night and I cleaned it up. Works fine. I found some 60 sanding drums too. It hasn't been used in a long time but it's going to get re-purposed for nail trimming.

I have one of those too. While I've considered it, I have never used it for dog nails. After reading this thread I wonder if the lowest speed is perhaps too fast and would generate too much heat. Maybe I'll try it.

Maybe I’m doing it wrong, but I cannot stand the nail specific one because it is so slow. I run my regular dremel on 3/4 speed or so. I forget how many rpm that is, but it’s fast. Eats through a lot quicker with each quick pass and the nails do not heat up. Completely 100% painless for my dogs unless I take too much of the quick away.

My understanding is that you want about 10,000 to 15,000 rpm for nail trimming. My Dremel starts at 5,000 rpm so I was going to put it on #2 setting.

Get them used to the noise of the dremal. We gave them treats (well actually kibble but we gave it to them one kibble at a time). It didn’t take long for them to get used to it. As mentioned, light pressure as it will heat up the nail quickly.
