I had a chance to get the dogs out and run them on the quail I released yesterday from the JH. The dogs went on point but until I got closer the birds ran off. But I did get some pictures of the dogs:

Shortly after that the dogs worked about 50 yards down the edge of the woods and we found the birds that ran off:

I decided not to flush the birds since I saw this guy flying around. At least he kept circling away from me and the quail.

I left the edge of the woods and walked in the switch grass. The dogs had another point but I couldn't produce anything. A little later in a different field they had another point.

And this is what flushed from the field:

We kept working the switch grass and ended up finding a single quail. I was able to flush him and he flew towards the woods where the other quail were hanging out. I left the dogs work some more and they had a few more points in the woods.

Blitz found some of them hiding in a brush pile:

I'll run the dogs for a few more weeks and stop in April. I hope these birds can hang around for a while. It makes things fun! My wife also saw a rooster a 1/2 mile away from where I run the dogs.

I ran the dogs again today in the area I released the quail. First thing I saw was 3 hawks flying overhead. But they ended up flying away as I walked around. Nittany and Blitz pointed on the edge of some switchgrass and about 15-20 birds flushed. Later they found 3 more singles. It was good to see that a large number of birds made it through the first week. I got some pics but they are not the best since they are from my phone.

I'll run the dogs one more time in March and then stop for a few months. I hope they can hold on for a while. At least they are staying in the cover.

Had the dogs out again today to see if we could find any of the birds. It was on the warm side today (80) and scenting conditions were not the best. The dogs didn't have any points but we did get some quail in the air. There seems to be a good number of birds surviving. Its been a little over 3 weeks since I left them out of the johnny house. The birds seemed to be in good condition and flew well. This was the last time I'll run the dogs for a few months. I hope the quail can hang on for a while. It would be great if I could find a few of them later in the summer.

Stopped by the area today without the dogs to see if any of the birds were still around. I was able to see some quail on the edge of the woods and when they ran off I was able to count 15 birds. I also saw two differnt singles hanging out for a total of 17 that I was able to see. I hope there were more there but I'm pretty happy with the numbers I was able to see after releasing 23 birds a few weeks ago.
