dog vest

all of my gsp have been kinda the standard liver ticked and other than an occasional barbed wire scratch, I have never had abrasion problems even after numerous full days of running, excluding, sometimes the poor balls look bad enough to make a grown man cry. anyway, there are and have been vest of one type of another on the market for just about ever. I guess that if I had ever wanted my dog to look like a wall street poodle riding around in its rolls, I would have bought one. many of my friends have tried them, mostly they seems to have white and or possible light skinned dogs that after on day in the field looked at least sorrowful and mostly the vest were a joke, didn't hold up, stay on or otherwise just a nuisance. anyway, the other day pastor john, he has a now 2 yr. female, mostly white, some black gsp and after a day of hunting, she looks like she been out there for a week. john just bought what I though was a high quality vest at cabela's, hoping it to solve the problem. he used it the other day, heavy cover for the most part, really cold, some snow. at the end of the day, the dog looked worse than it ever had, nearly everywhere the vest could rub, it did and looking at the dog was enough to make you cry. the vest is now in the trash heap. there were many adj. that could be made for a better fit, thought that was done. anyway, the vest made the dog worse off than had he not used anything. any of you yahoo's out there had good luck with them or otherwise words of wisdom, remember, he is a pastor, gotta keep it clean.

I hunt with a chest protector for upland on my GSP and a neoprene vest for waterfowl in the cold. The neoprene had to be completely altered as they fit labs well not GSP's. I cut a triangle out of the waist area and glued it back together with neoprene diving glue. Works great but she doesn't run much in that vest since we are duck hunting.

The mendota skid plate is what I use for upland (just bought a filson but havent used it yet). It works great but, again, I tailored it to not rub. I just make sure that none of the vest sits inside her armpits or that will rub. If you trim it, it will work fine. they also cannot be too loose or they will rub badly. I can get about 1-2 full days with rubbing but she needs a break from it after that.

Same here -- Mendota Skid Plate & I've has zero issues. I used a neo when I hunted ducks with favorable results, but I did trim, tailor, & adjust both to fit well. Hank has used his skid plate for 3 years & it has held-up well.

My dog anhialated one from Orvis, which they don't make anymore. I bought a Sylmar which chafed too much. Ended up with a Skid Plate too. I washed and dried several times to soften it up. It works well.
