I can tell you one to avoid, (www.starttofinishgundogtraining.com) the so-called trainer did absolutely nothing with her for 3 months. Do search and you'll find other complaints with him
I ended up taking my Lab to Flatlander Kennel, and Chris Jobman did an amazing job with Katy. Just as excited for pheasants as she is for waterfowl. A buddy took his dog there too and is very happy as well
There are a few good ones. Like I have said before, I am a Gary Rupel fan. There are a few members on this forum that are good as well and you will find some of their clients on here endorsing them as well. Go out and meet with several on site. Take a look at the facilities and the cleanliness of those facilities. Sit in on a few sessions with other dogs. You have several that are close to you.
Julie Knutson and the Merritts at Bearpoint Kennels work with pointing labs. Julie Knutson wrote the book "Training the Pointing Lab", excellent book covers from puppyhood to finished retriever.
Reasonable priced I can tell you that the price range you will encounter varies from $500 - $700 a month, not to include birds.
I have trained, hunted, judged, ran in field trials, hunt tests, and bred labs since 1992. However, it has been more for the retriever games. I have never trained a pointer. Well now with pointing labs, and I bought a pointing lab pup last year, I am learning a whole different world. The thing I have learned the most is that you can't have to many flyaways to get the point out and you never make a pointing lab sit in the upland field.
I went to watch the pointing lab test and I was truly impressed with how these dogs worked in the field and their points. I have hunted over GSP's, wirehairs, vizlas, and brittany's. The labs I saw pointed as good as those dogs.
Good luck and hopefully your pup will be ready for hunting season this fall....because it is right around the corner!!
