Hi guys, I hunted last fall in the Dickinson area and I’m going back later this week. I ran into some sand burrs but didn’t realize it until the dog had quite a few stuck bad. I put his boots on and we finished the trip ok. For those of you that hunt in that area is that common? Do you guys boot up right away? Or just watch very carefully for them? Any help would be appreciated.
 
I live SW of Dix and we have quite a bit of cactus in the area. There is one PLOTS near our place that I simply won't take the Wrecking Crew because of the amount of cactus. Some of those spines will go through Lewis Dog Boots or even the side of leather hunting boots without a problem.
 
Ground cactus, nasty. Need leather gloves and leatherman to remove, incredibly sharp. Think giant sand burr.

Hunted the grasslands south of Williston this year and the cactus were the worst Ive seen. Bird numbers were great but moved off after the second day due to the dogs all limping. Leatherman type tool is a must.
 
Sand burrs and prickly pear cactus are common the further west you go in ND. Southwest being the most likely area where both occur.
 
Some dogs learn to avoid them, some flat out don't care and power through them. Some give up after the first one that gets stuck. Using Tough Foot helps but there is no real answer. High moisture mornings they are less of a problem. But those have been hard to come by since mid August.
