Do you know a source for training birds?

I live in the Wausau area and will be needing birds on which to work my pup. I prefer quail as they are easy to care for and handle. My regular source has an avian virus and most of his birds died last summer. Any assistance is most appreciated.

Murph: Contacted the folks in Indiana and they dropped off 30 birds for me this past Friday night on their way through to their family place in N WI. Like you said, nice lady. Today was day 3 of working the pup on birds. Just over a year old. He's so excited right now! These next couple weeks are going to be a lot of fun. Thanks for the lead.

Day 4

Man! This dog is wound up when going to the training field. After the first day he knew birds were going to be there. He's tearing up that field. First bird this morning he crept in and bumped, stopped to flush. Second bird he was surprised by the scent, even though he smelled my trail from going in the drop the bird. Locked up tight, left front paw raised in a classic pose and held for a quite a while, allowing me to get my hands on him, calm him, stroke him. When I went to flush he crept a step, then stopped to flush. I'm really excited after getting a true, solid point out of him. This is a fun time with him.

Day 13

I thought we were having fun before, but we're really at it now. Max is holding staunch points, allowing me to flush. I'm killing them and he's retrieving. He's like poetry in motion watching him work the wind. We've got one more day with two planted birds. On Friday we'll scour the area looking for my resident birds. There are about 20 out there if predators haven't already taken their toll. This morning we put a small covey, running around in the corn adjacent to the training field and going back to the truck I could hear one singing away to call his mates. Max's ready for the next step of hitting the grouse/woodcock woods, which will happen Saturday. I can't wait to get in the woods.

Nice. Glad it worked out.

The pups development continues. He's been mopping them up! Holding staunch on point, has the intelligence to figure out what to do when a bird is running. We're having a lot of fun. Next spring I'm going to have to retrieve train him. He retrieves a dummy and was retrieving birds early, but has now quit on me. Heading for Iowa tomorrow for a weekend pheasant hunt, his first on those birds. Am anxious with anticipation.

If you can tell me how to train a pointer how to retrieve consistently I'm all ears!

My first two would retrieve ducks but getting them to retrieve peasant or quail never worked. My new dog does it gladly.... No clue why but I'm afraid the other dog will teach him to chomp.
