Deer season doldrums...

Probably my own paranoia, but when gun deer season starts in Wisconsin, I keep the dog in the house, and only dream about pheasant hunting.

When it was shotgun-only around here, I was less concerned, but with the change in regs a few years ago, allowing rifles, I just don't want to be out working the edges of fields.

Funny, but I'm more concerned about the dog than I am my own safety.

I hunt deer, but that's really venison shopping. Pheasant hunting with my dog is what I wait for all year long. Mick has had his best year since I adopted him and it grinds on me to shut down our hunts, but just not worth the risk.

Anyone else curtail their bird hunting during deer season?

yes, thats why Im trying to get out for a 1/2 day on Friday. I have 2 Goldens and would never take them on public land thats open to deer hunting.

Be careful if you are going to hunt in Wisconsin.

Can't find the regs right now, but usually, the day before gun deer season is a "no shooting" day in the State.

Look it up, be expensive if that is still the rule of law.

No, I don't skip out on pheasant hunting during deer (rifle) season. I do, however, take several steps out of caution.
1. If I see any indication that a deer hunter is in the area (stand, bait, trailcam, unfamiliar truck), I go elsewhere. Makes sense from a safety point of view, and from a respect for fellow outdoorsmen, I figure they only get two weeks, while I get 6 weeks.
2. Yellow lab wear's an orange vest and bell. Takes any possibility of "thought she was a deer" out of the equation. That way, it will be easier for me to explain to a jury why I used my lovely Beretta as a popsicle stick on the offending shooter...........
That said, the overlap between deer and pheasant hunting grounds in Nova Scotia is minimal. The vast majority of deer hunters seem to hunt in the woods. Also, several of the fields that I hunt are legal only for shotguns (greater distance prohibitions for rifles).

I'll be chasing deer the first 2 or 3 days with maybe some grouse hunting mixed in,then ducks,or pheasants after that.

Orange on the dogs and me if we are moving, and avoid areas anyone else is hunting. I try and get away from the crowds any time I hunt so during deer season is just another day afield.

and yeah check the regs about hunting on friday. They did change them making it legal to hunt small game that friday in a cwd zone but double check.

Yeah that didnt go so well this morning. Tried a spot I'd never been to since it was only 30 mins from home and my time was limited.
Yet another WI wildlife area thats managed for deer.
There may be a few birds but.....
Check that one off the list...

Jeez I think deer season should be one weekend only. As many deer as you can shoot in 2 days. I could have shot at least 4 today. Shouldn't need any longer than a day or two to bag a few deer. :10sign:

In Vilas and Langlade counties, where I hunt, the deer population is about extinct. The past 3 seasons, 18 days total, zero deer sighted and last year our group was skunked for the first time. I haven't missed the opener since I lived and worked in Florida over 25 years ago, but missed this year due to a trip taken with my wife. With such poor prospects I didn't mind taking the trip and missing the weekend. However, I'll be heading to camp right after we close up shop on Wednesday. I'm not about to miss the entire season, regardless of the poor deer population.
