Day off

Finally got a day off and took the pup and kids out yesterday. Got a late afternoon start, but still managed to get a shot a single quail and pheasant in the first Walk in place. Last field of the day didn't result in any shots, but that was my fault for not walking the edge of the road. 20 pheasants got up as 100 yards south of the truck as we drove away.
All in all, a good day with my pup and my 3 and 6 year old boys!

The days with your sons are non-refundable. Enjoy them all my friend. Don't you hate that when it happens? I remember leaving a field after a hunt and witnessing a large group of birds fly back into the cover from an adjoining field. We can't win all the time, right?

what i always like is when your done hunting and you hear one cackiling now thats like haha take that u suck buddy lol, on my last trip one did that

There are some birds on WIHA's if you get on the right ones. I know of a quarter that has a draw on the back side of it the I bet has 50 pheasants in it right now. I don't think it ever gets hunted except the locals that own the land next to it and me. There are other WIHA areas that have the same kind of honey holes if you burn some shoe leather and find them. I have access to lots of private ground, but I still hunt some WIHA every trip.

I agree that there are honey holes to be found and there are a good number of them. In the NW I disagree on public land. I mainly hunt private but I know several people that farm in the NW and have walk in around there land. Everyone of them tells me the walk in gets hunted daily by multiple groups. The one just by his house he has counted 7 different groups in the same day hunt the same field. They all say they get hunted probably on the average of 3 groups a day. Not good if your planning on shooting anything. One thing I've learned about hunting is you never want to bet on how many birds will be in a field. The time you think you have them hammered down the best and you tell your buddy you know your going to see them it will turn around and bite you in the ass. Happened to me many times. Thats why its called hunting and the birds are going to be wherever they want to be. Everyone have a good xmas and get out and get some good dog work over the holidays.

Great job Medic on getting your kids out with you. Nothing better imo than making those memories with your children.

The quarter I was referring to has been hayed. The draw is on the very back side and you can't see it from the road. I hunt it several times every year and have never saw another hunter there except some locals that drove back to it from private ground it joins. I agree the good looking WIHA gets hunted a lot, but some stuff that looks bad from the road and people drive right by, may have some spots you cant see that can be really good. I know of another patch that is 2 miles long with the only road being at one end. The cover along the road is sparse at best, but 2 miles from the road at the far end has one of the best draws I have ever hunted. Its a long ways to carry a limit of birds I can tell you that for sure. Something else I've noticed is that the bigger that WIHA the less it gets hunted. I like whole sections. I think a lot of guys get intimidated by the size.
