Kansas Crop Status Update

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service says the heat last week has caused the state's wheat crop to mature early. The agency reported Monday that half of the wheat has now turned color. About 11 percent of the wheat acreage is mature, compared with 3 percent at this time a year ago and 6 percent on average. KASS says in its weekly crop update that wheat condition remained unchanged. It is rated at 25 percent very poor, 29 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 15 percent good and 2 percent excellent.
The state's corn is faring better. About 4 percent of the corn is in poor to very poor condition, 35 percent is rated as fair, 54 percent is in good shape and 7 percent is rated as excellent.
