creating and loading base map on GPS

I don't know if this is the right place for this link, but here goes.

I am looking at creating or adding maps to my GPS. I have a pair of Garmin's: Nuvi 1450T and Venture HC.

I see that the Minnesota DNR provides a WMA base map. I would like to add Snowmobile trails, logging roads in the National Forests, hiking trails and trout rivers to my GPS.

I don't know where to begin. Any help would be appreciated.
 
I've got a Garmin 60CSx which I think is kind of like your Venture. I've loaded Garmin's Topo maps on it and was happy. Used it in Colorado on an elk hunt, it showed all the streams, topography, and trails for the wilderness area we were hunting. The downside is its about $100 to buy the maps. I used my brother in laws for free.

I also know there is a website out there that has topo maps for free, but not sure where I saw it referenced.
