Man, hunted private Crp corners on corn circles for the past 2 days with my dad, 2 sons, and 2 dogs and have flat not seen anything. We are experienced hunters and I just can't figure it out. HELP!!!

With the incoming weather change sometimes the birds make a complete 180 from their normal routine of eat, loaf, eat, bedtime. Try to find a grain field with some good stubble and work through the stubble with some sort of plan to imagine you are driving them into the grass or corner with roads, wheat, something to help you block the sides. They have possibly been in the grain most of the day and if you were hunting grass you missed them. Another possiblity is someone was in there the day before and they were driven out and haven't returned yet.

Are you serious when you say that you have not seen anything?

Private grass corners?

Have you seen any on the roads or out in the fields?

Does the farmer let everyone who asks hunt?

I guess so. We knocked on a door and got the access. The place does not look like it has been shot up (shells, tracks) but I guess maybe it has. Oh well, we still have tomorrow and it sure beats working. We will keep trying.

there's birds arround- asking and getting permission on those corner circles you speak of- most likely everyone has hunted them- the pheasants just got skittish and moved off- some say private in the scense of not many get to hunt on it

check out some WIHA's- big areas- small sections you probably won't have any luck

what kind of dogs do you have-

I went out this morning- ran two in my play area- 7 hen and 3 roosters points- put them up and drove a mile- had heard some serious shooting in the WIHA- talked to them- got one rooster- just as loaded up and left another vehicle pulled in- Red pickup with a dog trailer- I was going to let my two other Britt's out and cover the field- but heck- let them have it-

hit this other section- heard a bunch of shooting- wondering what they were shooting at- quite possibly they have versatile dogs and shoot rabbits- which is good

thing is- if it's a good looking area- close to grain like this burr grass stuff- a good pointing dog can still provide you some enjoyment- boots- most don't run dogs in this stuff- pheasants learn

Thanks Shadow, I have a pointing lab and 2 GSP's. We went out today and saw more birds. We made several passes accross the big CRP WIHA's and ended with 7 legitimate shot opportunities. The boys both got excited and missed 3, and dad and I got 4 shots 3 kills.

Dad is getting older and his knees don't work quite like they used too, but we pushed 4 fields and enjoyed the great weather and moisture. The boys have learned this year that a shot opportunity requires hard work and careful planning. A good life lesson in general if you ask me.

I don't care what you say, my boys and I will never get in huge groups with blockers and walk and wipe section fields for the sake of killing birds. The thrill of the hunt and the respect of the tradition will be taught in our house.

I just got back from Southwest Kansas, not far from Liberal and experienced the same thing on Saturday. I hunted good private land and found none in the CRP corners. I started hunting around 10:30 on Saturday and hunted corners for an hour and a half and didn't see a bird. Moved to the feed fields and it didn't take long to figure out that's where the birds were. Seen quite a few birds in the wheat stubble as well. Most of the CRP is so thin out there, there's more cover in the feed fields anyhow.
