Colorado WIA's

I just want to take a minute and thank all the people who see this thread and are involved in securing and providing Colorado WIA's. I very much appreciate it and the work and commitments that go into it! I am very happy to have these areas to hunt. People may complain about lack of hunting areas, but I for one am happy with the areas and birds I have found. I'm pretty new to Colorado pheasant hunting and these areas, but compared to other states that I have hunted the access and bird numbers are great! It's the closest thing to hunting my home state of Montana 20 years ago. I don't know if the winter will change things, but right now the hunting has been great for me and the pup! Good luck to all and be grateful for the things we do have!!!

Amen! I, too, am thankful for the WIA program. I was a wildlife manager in Michigan and during pheasant season in southern Michigan the few landowners that would allow hunting would get pounded with permission seekers. The fields would have 4+ parties with dogs in them. It was very frustrating. I have had many good days on WIA's and I appreciate the landowners who enroll their properties for our benefit. Treat them well!

I completely agree. The WIA program got me back into upland hunting after essentially giving up on it for years. I have spent many pleasant days on the prairie as a result, and gotten new hunters into the sport hunting on WIA. I thank the landowners and organizers of the program for all those memories.

By the way, my experience last weekend was that the birds were dispersed and there is a lot of pressure so many fields will have already been hit by mid day. There are still birds to be found, the photo was from yesterday morning. The old bird on the right ruined the photo when he lost his tail feathers trying to get away from my dog.

Enjoy the next weeks on the prairie, I'll be hunting in the mountains for a while.

I agree as well! One of my favorite things about Colorado Walk in is that is is varied size, shape and terrain. I went out to Kansas last year... and they have lots of it but it is almost entirely huge sections of CRP... almost impossible to do much with by yourself or with 1 other guy...

Colorado has corners, strips, etc... so the loner can find a corner to push with some hope for "natural blocking". I was afraid it would disappear after they dropped the extra fee, but it has not seemed the case!

Go CDOW!!!
