Colorado Sooner

Hey all. Shane here. From Oklahoma but living in Colorado at the moment. I do plan to return to the great Sooner state. Went on my first pheasant hunt in some walk in areas this year. No dogs trained for the hunt but did jump one bird.

I will be getting a Deutsch-Drahthaar later this spring and look forward to hunting over her in the fall.

Came to this forum to learn all I can about pheasants and hunting them. As of now I have not killed one and have only seen a handful. Look forward to meeting some guys in my area who may be able to educate me on some of the basics of dog training as well.

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to post about your hunts and add photos which we all enjoy seeing.

Welcome to the forun: training a dog and seeing it flush/point birds will very soon become more rewarding than the actual hunt itself.

Welcome.

Now let me get this straight--you're an proud Okie living in Colorado getting a German dog registered in Berlin in the VDD? :)

Beautiful dog. What kennel?

Can I set you straight by just saying "military"

I found DDs from a Command Sergeant Major of mine in 2010. I was truly amazed by his dog and it's abilities. Then I was living in TN. I contacted guy in east TN who was having a litter while I was in Afghanistan. Everything was set for me to have a dog in 2011 upon my arrival as long as he had a female. His whole litter was males. No pup. And then I got orders to Germany.

Thought I'd get one from the DD mother land but didn't think I could invest the time needed with my new leadership position so I passed it up. I've finally gotten to the point that I am tired of putting off the opportunity to hunt with one of these fine animals so I started contacting kennels after kennels. Finally got info on a breeder in Idaho who has me on his list for a early summer pup.

Long story short.....excited to see where this adventure goes.

First, thank you for your service!

My Duke is now gone. He was a great dog and friend. I have a GSP now that I got when he was 3 from a young man that had to move for employment. He is my best bud now.

Duke came from Lynda Franklin-Krull of South Dakota.

I am also familiar with the Deutsch Kurzhaar and have hunted behind dogs of Tom and Vanita Skinner from South Dakota.

Sorry for the loss. I know that day will come for my golden (non-hunter) and can only imagine. He's a great dog. I hope he doesn't get jealous of the DD to much though.

I looked at Krull's kennel a few times. Great bloodlines.

May I ask why you didn't get another DD and instead chose to go with the GSP? Also, did you test Duke and if so how far? If talking about Duke is not comfortable I understand.

Welcome, I'm an Okie too but have spent the last 24 years in Amarillo. I have two GWP's and one DD. All three are fantastic dogs. The DD is from a breeder in Eligin OK. Great dog! The two GWP's are out of different kennels there in Colorado. If I can help you with your search let me know.

Amarillo's nice too. I've talked to the breeder in OK a few times. He seems like a great guy with a good kennel. He was willing to board my dog w/ training anytime I was back down to Sill for school. For a price of course.

If my spring litter falls through I may be contacting him.
