Saturday morning came early with my cousin and myself and our three pups making are trip out east for another fun filled day of chasing Colorado pheasants. If it ain't broke don't fix it so we started out in our usual first WIA where we put up one rooster to my left which I let live with a couple shots behind him. Off to the hill where we flushed several hens which were nice to see. We gave the pups a small bit to eat before heading to private and talking about how this was the first time this season that we were heading there without any birds towards our 3 each bird limit.
We started in the wheat field where we usually do and with us getting about 100 yards from the end the dogs where going nuts putting several hens up until finally a rooster flushes with both of us shooting and just as you would expect the close roosters were counting the shots and when they knew we were out they flushed leaving us in a hurry to reload. We finished that field and headed back to the truck for a quick bite and about 20 minutes of talking to the land owner who came over to talk. Once we drove around to another field and walked about a mile Ivy the pointing lab was locked up solid and after a few shots the first rooster of the day fell to the ground, I looked at the time it was 11:25. Having the bird in my bag was a great feeling but seeing the point from a lab was incredible and worth driving out there to see. Walked a bit more before flushing a rooster in front of my cousin but flew right in front of me giving him no shot but gave me my second bird, so I thought. After 10-15 minutes of searching we came up with nothing. Not to far from there as my cousin was coming back from the tip of the wheat corner we pinched a rooster up flying from left to right past me hitting the ground after my second shot, now I have two. The next field was met with a good amount of walking through the tall wheat bumping hens here and there until my gsp stopped with a nice point and a young rooster taking flight but gave me a great going away shot and my final bird of the day. A little later Ivy was showing us again that she knows how to put on a show with another tremendous point, head down crouched in the front and tail pointing straight out.
We ended the day with 5 birds, 1 we couldn't find, several misses, and a day full of just awesome dog work.
