Colorado 2015-2016 Week 8

Saturday morning came early with my cousin and myself and our three pups making are trip out east for another fun filled day of chasing Colorado pheasants. If it ain't broke don't fix it so we started out in our usual first WIA where we put up one rooster to my left which I let live with a couple shots behind him. Off to the hill where we flushed several hens which were nice to see. We gave the pups a small bit to eat before heading to private and talking about how this was the first time this season that we were heading there without any birds towards our 3 each bird limit.
We started in the wheat field where we usually do and with us getting about 100 yards from the end the dogs where going nuts putting several hens up until finally a rooster flushes with both of us shooting and just as you would expect the close roosters were counting the shots and when they knew we were out they flushed leaving us in a hurry to reload. We finished that field and headed back to the truck for a quick bite and about 20 minutes of talking to the land owner who came over to talk. Once we drove around to another field and walked about a mile Ivy the pointing lab was locked up solid and after a few shots the first rooster of the day fell to the ground, I looked at the time it was 11:25. Having the bird in my bag was a great feeling but seeing the point from a lab was incredible and worth driving out there to see. Walked a bit more before flushing a rooster in front of my cousin but flew right in front of me giving him no shot but gave me my second bird, so I thought. After 10-15 minutes of searching we came up with nothing. Not to far from there as my cousin was coming back from the tip of the wheat corner we pinched a rooster up flying from left to right past me hitting the ground after my second shot, now I have two. The next field was met with a good amount of walking through the tall wheat bumping hens here and there until my gsp stopped with a nice point and a young rooster taking flight but gave me a great going away shot and my final bird of the day. A little later Ivy was showing us again that she knows how to put on a show with another tremendous point, head down crouched in the front and tail pointing straight out.
We ended the day with 5 birds, 1 we couldn't find, several misses, and a day full of just awesome dog work.

Glad you had success! I went out alone on Saturday, and got mostly hens up (and not too many of them). No roosters flushed in range. It was just me, and I have no dog, so the odds weren't in my favor. But, I can usually get two or three when I am along. Too warm, I think. The birds were staying in the corn fields, where they could see anything coming.

We'll see how this weekend goes. Supposed to hunt with someone with a good dog. Looking forward to it!

Sounds like a good day. We got out Saturday as well and saw around 100 birds with a few good points but mostly running birds. The birds taken (4) were this years birds. I got a GoPro for Christmas so was trying to get some video and as it turned out I had it on 30 second pictures so all of the footage I shot was a bunch of non-sensical still shots...... Oh well, still a great day but awful dry and 49 degrees. Hoping to go out a few more times so I need to use the new camera more before I go!

Happy New Year All

Thanks for the report and sounds like you're having a great time.

I try and go every other week-end to either western Nebraska or eastern CO. This past Sunday I took my son in law (on leave from the Navy) with me out to NE CO. He was not able to hunt, needs to get a hunter safety card (which is kind of ironic as he has all kinds of gun/safety training as part of Navy special forces). Anyway he went along with and had a great time seeing the country-side and plenty of pheasants - we saw 100+ birds.

My shooting was not the best, shot two but easily should have limited - not a big deal I was just happy to be out there  Everywhere we went we encountered birds, and couple fields were loaded with birds - but roosters mostly flushing at a distance. I'm impressed with the number of birds in both NE CO and western NE this year - hope this trend continues. Barring weather disasters next year should be excellent!

I agree that we should have another great year barring the weather. Please tell your son in law thanks for serving, and the same to all other service members.

Sounds like another amazing day in the field. You seem to find a lot of birds in the wheat stubble. I need to venture into that stuff more often. Good work.
