cold to warm weather gear

i wear a standard carhart pocket tee shirt under thin dull flannel shirt and a medium weight upland vest. if its below 40 degrees i add a medium weight zippered hoody. below 20 degrees, i might go with the thinnest long underwear top, but its got to be really cold to wear the bottoms. went out yesterday in 40 degree weather no hoody. sun popped out last 20minutes as we climbed the hill back to the truck, upper body soaked in sweat thru both shirts and into the vest. what is the best wicking undershirt out there, and does the outer shirt need to be wicking also? im sure a strap vest would help, but i have not been able to actually try on one that i like. hopefully pheasant fest will have several options.

I can count on one hand the number of times I have pheasant hunted and not broke a sweat...the answer would be none. I think myself and most people over dress, but you will be cold for the first 20 minutes (or until the first bird is in the coat/vest-they are a good heater) if you are still cool, at the end of the hunt. I hunt with a gsp and we are both there like "we are on a mission"...I might just be putting more effort into this than most....I usually take my pheasant hunting pretty serious unless I am with a bigger group (more than 2), then I am more or less forced to slow down.

Any lightweight merino wool will help you feel drier. I agree with Remy though. There's never been a time when I got back to the truck dry. They key is wearing the fabrics that don't stick to your skin and make you feel like you're getting strangled in your own clothes, like a cotton shirt does. I also found out this year that I like wearing shirts a size too large when hunting too as when you layer properly fitting clothes they can start to feel a bit restricting.

Any long sleeve moisture wicking shirt with a light merino jacket. I dress so I’m cold the first 15 minutes and by the time I’m back at the truck I’m sweating.
