Christmas break hunt

Men; I need some advice from you. Most of my pheasant & quail hunting takes place around Wellington, Kansas; but each year I have been very fortunate to hunt also in southwest Kansas on mostly private ground during school breaks. This year I need to make adjustments because of the drought. My plan during Christmas break is to take two or three days and head northwest and hunt walk in ground. My first question is should I go north on highway 183 and walk ground or 283? Also how far north should I go before Moss (our family lab) & I begin to hunt? I'm not looking for your honey hole on wak-in land just a genral area that I may see brids in a middle of the week hunt.

I hope to talk my son who is also a school teacher into joining me on this adventure.

Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

I think the farther north you go the better.

I went out on the 23rd of November, north of I-70 along the 283 corridor, and found birds. We, my dog and I, bumped 25-30 birds, with quite a few (most) getting up out of range. Lots of hens, a few roosters. Had fun watching my pup starting to put it all together.
