Canine Peripheral Vestibular Syndrome

Hello all,

Well it has been a trying week for my 13 year old lab. Last Tuesday early in the morning he was not able to stand and every time he was able to get up he would begin to stagger and fall over (looked like he had too many beers). So a trip to the emergency vet was in order. I thought the worst and believed that he may have had a stroke overnight. After some simple tests that included ear and eye examine the doc informed us that he had Canine Peripheral Vestibular Syndrome, which is a lot like Vertigo in humans. The tell tale signs are a slant of the head and rapid eye movement. The doc also said that there is not a concise cause of the syndrome as well as no cure except for time.

He has shown some improvement over the past few days and is able to go on short walks and make it around the house fairly well, but still seems to be quite disoriented.

I was wondering if anyone on the board has had any experience with this problem and how recovery went. I am still continually nervous that he wont be able to fully recover or even get worse.

wow. I'm sorry to hear about that. I hope for a speedy recovery.

When our ESS pup was just a hair older than that, I opened up her crate to a similar scenario. Wobbly, unsteady. could barely sit. Our vet couldn't find anything though, and our best guess was that she had ate some gum (I forget what the chemical in it affects them), but a day or so later she was back and going. I cross my fingers yours bounces back so fast.

Keep us posted on the progress.

Thanks for the reply CD. Morrison is doing much better, making around the house and yard just fine, just still having a little trouble up and down the stairs. I do have to say it was one of the scariest things I have been through, I can't imagine how he was feeling. Thank goodness he is recovering though.

I wish your trusted dog a speedy recovery. Even if he does not return to normal, he will still wag his tail and enjoy your company till his days are done.

I know exactly what your dog is going through. I was in the ER Tuesday morning 2:30am with vertigo. Bad thing It's called positional vertigo. For me that means it comes on only when I lay down...
