drove up to Webster Resevior to meet/camp/hunt with a guy on a forum who last year didn't think big running dogs could handle pheasants- we went back and forth a bit- things mellowed out and he invited me to come join him this year

not sure what to expect- he had 3 pointers one 18 months old- a good, great, and excellent is the way he described his- all backed- so figured no reason my 4 couldn't be put in with them

noone at camp when I showed up Sunday- pitched the tent- staked out 3 Britt's-

12X12 outfitters tent set up- the guy really knew how to camp- had been up in Nebraska for a week and been here a week- 3 other tents arround- voice mail said others came from from 2 states- bit worried now-

they start coming in just before dark-

next morning 2 other vehicles come in- lots of dogs arround- saw my first ever Spinone- still laughing

we all head to Hill City, bank says -2F everyone wants to start at one side of this 2 mile WIHA- I'm not for it- so the guy with the three pointers and I head to the other end- big dirty cut milo field- wind comeing right at us- I smile- Britts are going to like this

he has shocker collars on all 3 of his- I'm surprised- as he'd been saying his run close and handle nicely- bit worried now-

So I strap the Garmins on Shadow and Lizzi my 16 month pup- leave the other two in the dog box to let out later- Shadow I never put up that first day

I was glad to find out both my pups weren't bothered by all the other dogs and handled nicely- very seldom did I have to use the whistle

back at the vehicles, everyone wanted to go scout for another area- I said I was staying here- superb country wth pheasants and quail- 5 of them who had never hunted with pointing dogs wanted to go with me- I really tried to instruct on how to hunt behind pointing dogs- but 5 excited hunters wanting to hurry in on the point was not working- next morning they wanted to go with me again- I tried to give them all the points so they could get some roosters and quail-

don't think I'll ever do this again-

Sounds like a pretty good outing as far as the dogs were concerned. Sorry to hear it wasn't necessarily to your liking. This has been a great season to this point. I'm sure you'll have the opportunity to enjoy some solo hunts before season closes.

Out of curiosity, what inspired you to drive up there w/ such good #'s in the SW this year? Was it just the opportunity to hunt w/ old friends/new dogs?

i have never been one to hunt with more than 2 or 3 guys, more than 3 dogs on the ground at once?......no thanks, there is often more competition than bird finding.

why- because the guy was so against the so called run-off dogs- didn't think a dog with wheels could point and hold pheasants- his boot polishers were so much better- and sort of dared me to come up

any decent NSTRA dog could best anything he showed me

chuckling- I've been solo hunting all my life
shot 3 roosters over the pups as I went out for a couple hours here

Ha, was wondering how that turned out. Glad your dogs faired ok.

I thought there was more to the story. I just couldn't picture you leaving the area you live in to hunt up there, but now I know why. Too bad the guy was just blowing smoke.

Hunting solo often yields better success for me too. Congrats on the short solo hunt around home:cheers:

you know what- I actually had a blast- didn't have to worry about sand burrs-

if you'd only been hunting behind close pointing dogs and the tailgate or backend opens up and a couple firebreathers hit the ground- first thing you think is- crap! every bird in the field will flush

was interesting- first morning- no need to get to the field early- better hunting if we wait- that's what he said- I just shrug- finially stopped at 10:20am- field was huge- I figure to stay all day- 12:30 back at the vehicle- to chance pups- everyone wanted to go scouting- pheasants and quail were arround- knew they hadn't gone all that far- kept asking- anyone want to go with me I'll leave the gun and just work the pups on the points and backing-

you know how it is- you've had points- some real poor shooting but I kept saying- it's good- still around to hunt- I could have shot two limits of roosters and quite a few quail- but I wanted the others to shoot

ahhhhh my male met his first porqupine- swatted him on the side of the face- he held while I pulled out some 60 quills- had to use my teeth on a few- rinsed his mouth and face- off he went- 1/2 hour before legal shooting ended the others were off to the vehicle

heck- I had the Garmin and knew when sunset was- so Shadow Lizzi and I made a big cast- coming back close to the vehicles and the guys standing it beeps- point- 140 yards out- I head towards the point and back- stop and pull out the Garmin- 9 min of legal hunting- move arround and come in facing Shadow- nice rooster comes up- bang- Shadow and Lizzi are bringing it- nice way to end the day- in sight of watchers-

Lizzi spins arround and locks up real close- rooster in my left hand, shotgun in right- pull out the Garmin- 3 min left- lets make this quick guys- rooster comes up with Lizzi trying for the tail- flip the gun up- Shadow is standing right in line- dang rooster is moving and a bit up- bang bang- it's out a bit for 7 shot- Lizzi brings it back-

at the vehicles- guys say nice- I hand them the two roosters-
they want to go with me the next day
