Bulk Dog Food - Is It Fresh?
Any organic substance, including dry dog food, deteriorates over time, especially if not refrigerated or frozen. While I understand that freshness is assisted by the addition of harmless preservatives, I would hesitate to buy such large qualtities of dog food that it takes months and months (or longer) to consume. I prefer buying dog food off the grocery store shelf where it arrived shortly after manufacture. Also, changing dog food is often accompanied by a reaction on the part of the dog -- loose stools, gas, and, one can assume, abdomonal discomfort. Thus, another advantage of buying dog food at the grocery store is that is is available no matter where you are. I always transfer my dog's food to a smaller plastic container that holds about a week's worth of food which I grab when it's time to load for a trip. I always wash the container when I buy a new bag of food, again to insure freshness.
