By all means suit yourself when selecting your dog. But know that any halfway well bred hunting breed can be trained to retrieve at a reasonably high level quite easily.

My EP's are Honky-tonk Attitude and Guard Rail lines and both retrieved naturally. I have always played a lot of fetch with all my dogs from puppies on and haven't had to force fetch one yet.
