Hunted a game production area last hour yesterday. Driving down the road looking at a big GPA and had a couple hens fly out of the ditch and land 50 yards out. I continued down the road a parked. Hunted the ditch back to where the hens had been no stragglers. Heavy sedge and cattails with lighter patches mixed in. Wind was right so headed in . Went about 70 yards and then went parallel to the road for a 100. Dogs trailed some but nothing flushed so I went back to the road.
Saw some birds further down in the ditch so continued hunting the ditch. 2 more hens flushed wild. I was at the end of the slough and sweet clover wraps around the slough and is bordered by brome/sedge mix on the other side. Prime pheasant cover so in we went. About 60 yards out I heard multiple birds flush behind me. Turned around to see 8-10 birds that had flushed across the road coming into the GPA. Missed 2 long passing shots at roosters but marked where they landed.
Hunted about a 1/4 mile weaving in and out of the clover/grass/slough. Got a point on 1 hen and had 1 other hen flush wild. Now I was 75 yards from where I saw birds landing. Dogs were excited cattwalking and eyeballing me. All hell broke loose. Must have been 15 roosters and a few hens exploded in front of me. I swung on 5 birds before I squeezed off
a round dropping a bird. Just couldn't take long shots when there were more birds closer but by the time I got on them was the same thing , hey this 1's closer.
After the retrieve hunted a little further spotted a fair whitetail buck who somehow seemed oblivious to us so I turned around and headed back out following a dike I didn't know existed. Got points on hens multiple times but no more roosters.
This spot will be awesome after the first snow of any amount.
