Bird Numbers

Anyone else hear about bird numbers? I am hearing of lots of birds , more than last year at this time, but lots of Roosters. My guy said he saw 300 in a 10 mile drive and said I didn't put a dent in them at the house, cause there are lot's of Roosters running around the Barn. Guess we will watch the weather and hope everything goes well!!!! I like shooting old roosters anyway, just wish there were more hens than roosters!!!

Of course he saw lots of birds, hes going to see them bunched up and congregated on any snow free patch of cover. Its cold, and snowy.

I dont know if western KS got as much snow as we did in the middle part of the state, but the Candadian deep freeze with lows below zero coupled with 6" of snow this week and then 4-6" last week couldnt have been good for any animals particularly quail. Granted they know how to survive, but Im sure a lot of quail died the past couple of weeks.

That is the only way you will be able to tell what breeding stock you are going to have!! Limit the habitat they are using ,via weather, otherwise you might only see 10% of what is actually there!! That is why the Fish & Game count the deer and elk in the winter!!! Not as bad out there as you guy's got it up Northeast. Some fields have nothing, others that caught some snow 4-5 inches and some good drifts where ditches and landscape hold the wind blown snow. Sure it is on the way out with it warming so fast!! 70 degrees today. calling for 76 degrees on Thursday!!

i was working in ellsworth and barton co this pastweek, thursday i saw A LOT of pheasants everywhere, even saw some quail. I was on major roads the whole time, never did take a dirt road. looked to me the survived the storm:thumbsup:

Mom said she saw a covey a quail in the edge of the yard last week, they were jumping up pecking at the soybeans that didn't get combined trying to find something to eat in the snow. Kind of refreshing to hear of a covey of quail there (SEK), when we haven't even bothered hunting the farm for the last several years due to low numbers.

Down here in NE Ok, we had one for the record books. Unbelievable (for us) amount of snow and unbelievable (for anyone) temperatures. Got to -25 F at my home. Not a wind chill there. Anyway, my brother-in-law had a covey of 10 birds occassionally visiting his bird feeder earlier this fall.

Yesterday, he saw the covey in the back yard. They made it--all 10 of them. This really surprised me. Makes me a little more hopeful after this hellish winter storm we've had. I'm telling you folks, NE Oklahoma has not seen anything like this before. At least not in our lifetimes. It was a blowing snow, so it drifted really bad. Hopefully, this left some patches of bare ground here and there.

That's right, I said -25 F. We just don't get temperatures like that down here.
