The MN DNR has opened WMAs for emergency grazing and haying. Click on the link for the DNRs press release.

The assault on grasslands by AG continues and has sunk to a new low.

Ask yourself who pays for the fences? Who pays for invasive species control introduced by haying and grazing? Ask yourselves why if this is such a great way to manage grasslands then why are SNAs (scientific and natural areas) included-yet we can't hunt them on the prairie?

I strongly urge you that if you are concerned you contact your legislators and the governors office and vocally express your concerns.

Finally, try not to barf when you see the ads telling us how farmers are "stewards of the land" and "the original environmentalists" (ads are sponsored by Monsanto)

my friend you are dead wrong on the SNA thing dont know wear you get your info on not being able to hunt SNAs??? & that there is no cattle on them??? i have hunted 2-3 SNAs in MN & have seen cattle on 2 peaces of SNA lands...

they will use fire & cattle for different types of prairie control at different times & different stages of growth... many times SNA & nature conservancy go hand in hand obtaining lands in close proximity to SNAs & managing them after land is secured... nature conservancy also helps enroll lands that are basicly private but the landowner wants the land in nature conservancy so he lets them manage the land & let hunters on in select cases many times by writen permission only...

nature conservancy also helps secure WPAs & refuges in pheasant country across the country from what i have seen...

any way i understand the dislike of emergency haying but i dont understand the dislike of short term cattle grazing on public lands??? any hardcore or serious prairie grouse hunter knows that cattle & prairie grouse go hand in hand like well buffalo & prairie grouse did for many many years on the native prairies...

to much grazing is a bad thing for all i agree ofer2

they are already crying over on the SD thread again what a bunch of douches but lets keep the MN post to MN threads as them SD boys cry when they have to move a thread???

any way no need to argue just to argue ofer2 i agree 100% that over grazing is bad all around but not limited short term grazing... haying public lands is BULL S***

but no need to argue just to argue ofer2 a cow & a buffalo are 2 huge 4 legged bovine creatures & the graze on grasses & prairie grouse & even turkeys follow them around on the prairies there not all that different... very similar habits...

out west pheasants hang with cattle all winter in feed lots so they co exist ok wear the 2 overlap seen many pheasants hang n around alfalfa & timothy grass in cattle & horse country as well they were only living there due to the cattle & the ranching practices in the area... mainly the grasses to feed the cows/horses...

also i dont get what you are reefering to about fences & coast??? i have never hunted a public peace of land in MN other then a state/national forest that was not fenced already??? to tell wear the public & private land starts & stops...

are you talking about the $ i will coast to repair fences that cattle knock down???

& the MNDNR needs more staff if they are to BZ these guys working for them nowdays are a joke for the most part!!! there are alot of quality biologist & wildlife managers out there in MN but there is also a new age of non hunting tree hugger out of touch with average joe hunter in MNDNR workers out there who only camp & hike

alot of these MNDNR property managers need to spend more time on the WMAs & public lands under there control if you ask me? many of them have not been to many of the WMAs in years they manage or send others to manage for them u ask a question about a give n area & they say well i havent been there this yr or last but ill give you a number to a guy who has ETC. if they have to spend a few more days on the WMA now that cattle are graze n thats ok its there job to maintain the WMA its not there job to answer phones all day & direct other less senior staff to do there job...

they said they freed up MNDNR staff after they jammed all the MN turkey units together & maid less work for the MNDNR a few yrs ago then they eliminate the fall lottery all together for the same reason to free up staff for more important things??? we should have a few staff members free to help out on WMAs & cattle grazing???

they are already crying over on the SD thread again what a bunch of douches

Really name calling again--boo :p

No question, Cattle ranching and upland birds, including pheasant go VERY! well together.

sorry jim was talking about the guys on the thread not the boys of SD if u took it that way??? should of said cry babies i know...

its always the same people posting the threads in the wrong spots & the same guys that feel the need 2 point it out???

if the topic does not fit wear u think it should make a educated comment on the topic at hand then ask them to move it else wear???

otherwise if you dont like the topic of it does not apply to you no need to comment on the thread at all???

not talking about you jim you never say he why is this here??? its all about pheasants correct???

nothing but respect for you SDJIM!!!

The reason I posted this thread on MN and SD is to show all that threats to habitat and hunting opportunities are happening here in MN too, not just to our neighbors to the west.

I agree that pheasants will use grazed lands-I mean I've seen hundreds in feedlots late autumn for crying out loud.

The concern is what are we the folks who have given so much to get these WMAs purchased for all wildlife-I see this as a disturbing trend to let ag manage the lands and cut costs, with little in return. I've also seen hay and pasture land on private lands converted in recent years to row crops and am not dumber than a box of rocks to know that cattlemen are looking (drooling) at public land. I also get the PR campaign to make it appear as so doggone good and win-win.

The fact is we are all losing more than we are gaining-something that is not right at all, no matter how the DNR and Gov spin it. And I think the Gov is also pandering to ag interests ahead of the next election.

I like that some of you join in the discussion and talk about it!
