anyone else taking a break.....

Well, after a couple of weekends of bird hunting, I am taking a few weeks to work on getting some elk and maybe a deer for the freezer, anyone else going that route here in Montana? Opening weekend of elk season will find me near Big Timber, looking for a nice bull like many other Montanans. I was down there earlier this week and saw quite a few elk on the place I hunt, saw 3 dandy bulls but we all know, it is one thing to see them out of season, another during the season...lol. At least we are getting some moisture coming into the state lately, hopefully it continues, even if its that dang ole white stuff.

I hunted pheasants the first four days of the season and then took a few days off. My pups (and I) are rested and we are headed out again Wed.for 3days of pheasant hunting.

I had to do some soul searching on whether to go deer/elk hunting this weekend or chase Roosters. As I get older the thought of hiking up and down mountains is loosing its luster!! An old friend of mine once told me to wait until the elk come to you- don't try to chase them down. Been pretty fair advise over the years. I am going to wait for some wintry weather- then go after an elk;)

That does make sense.....Good Luck whenever you decide to go. I have a couple of friends coming to Montana and they chose opening week, so I will meet them at the ranch were hunting and try our luck. I think that cold snowy weather your talking about scares off alot of people from out of state to hunt the late season. I try and tell folks the best time to come is mid to late Nov. when the deer start to rut and the snow moves the elk down, but something about the possibility of snow , cold and wind seems to be negative to some people...LOL

This will be the first year in a loooong time that I won't be hunting elk in Montana. Guess I've packed all the elk meat out of the back country I care to. :) Still going after the Muley Bucks though, as you know deer ain't nothin like packing an elk.
I love getting into some nasty badlands, couple miles off a 2 track. Nothing but me and the yotes and deer.
Yeah, I go after antlers, take good care of the meat, but it's the antlers I'm in MT for.
We have tons of Whitetails on my ranch in MN. So venison is not a novelty.
I'm going to be bird hunting thurs afternoon and Fri then on to Muley country. Probably mix in pheasant hunting now and then to exercise the pups.

Hey MNM- Sounds like you got a good plan.

For the first time in 45 years, I am not going deer/elk hunting on opening day. I am headed out today for another 3 or 4 day Rooster chasin' trip. I grabbed the scatter gun this morning to pack it in the truck and my pups got very excited!! Hope the weather cooperates.

Hopefully anyone reading this, headed to the highline area from Malta to Bainville will forgo shooting does of either mulies or whitetails another year, after the winter of 2010-11, spring and summer flooding of 2011 and the EHD outbreak we experienced to our deer herd, numbers are way down still. Just because the FWP puts does tags out there does not mean the herd could use a little, or in this case, alot of help from sportsman. Last fall most local didn't bother to fill their tags up this way, however the out of staters still came and tried to shoot their tags full. Hopefully they now realize the situation the deer herd faces and will try and fill their tags somewhere else. It is very frustrating as a resident, to see someone from out of state come and shoot up a herd that is already hurting.

Amen !!!

Why DFWP continues to issue doe deer tags as though they are pieces of penny candy is beyond me. Are they trying to make room for the planned buffalo herd in that neck of the woods??

Actually, whitetails are relatively new to this area of Montana, with the help of agriculture they have expanded their range. All the cottonwood trees you see today along the milk river would not be there if the bison were still grazing these lands, they would have trampled them down if they were here. You can still see bison wallows many decades after they were made in this country. True, the mulies would have grazed with the bison along with antelope and grizzly bears also. But I am sure their are animals that used to live in your neighborhood also that are no longer there, are you trying to re-establish them where you live???
